While the "Land of the Morning Calm" may be an appropriate slogan for Korea (I don't know, I'm not up early enough to check, for the most part Very Happy ), I wonder if anyone can come up with anything a little more accurate. I realize that the ones I've come up with lack, ahem, a certain 'poetic elegance,' but I'm just spitballing here...Perhaps you can do better.

The Land of the Perennial Haze; You May Not See Blue Sky for Weeks!
The Land of the Ugly Apartment Complexes
The Land of Dangerous Taxi (feel free to substitute Bus here) Drivers
Come Enjoy the Oooh's and Aaaah's on All Our T.V. Variety Shows
The Land of the Painted Big Toe (and big toes only!)
The Land of Too Many People Too Close Together
Korea, the Home of Hot Women and Effeminate Men
Come to Korea, We Have the Highest Rate of Traffic Fatalities....In the World!!!
Korea, Way Less People than China, But You'll Hardly Notice!
Visit Korea, Your Snot Will Be Browner Than It Ever Has Been
Korea, Foreigners Welcome, as Long as They're White
The Land of Cheap Smokes and Soju
If You're a Man, You Can P*iss (feel free to substitute Vomit here) in the Street!
In Korea, We Make Our Kids Study Too Much!

Damn, this has been floating around in my head for a few days and I can't seem to remember any of the 'good' ones I came up with on those taxi rides to work Wink.
Anyways, I challenge all to come up with some more, and no, they needn't be negative although I realize most of mine are. C'mon, it's Sunday night and I've been working all weekend, what do you expect?

I've had this one floating around my head for years:

"Korea Has One Song".

At any given time, the same "hit" will be playing over again in every store, every bus radio, every sidewalk CD vendor... the song will be inescapable. Then after two or three weeks, it (as well as the song's singer) disappears, and a new song becomes the One Song, to the exclusion of any others. A Korean Top 30 list is a joke - it should just be the Top One. That's all they've got. One song.

I refuse to believe that it's because the masses love the One Song. It seems like the industry is so controlled, someone somewhere decides what song gets to be the One Song long before people hear it. And people dutifully go out and buy it because they're told, "this is the big hit".
