i have to say i've enjoyed almost all the korea movies i've seen ...

the obvious ones like taegukki, my sassy girl, the two sisters ...

old boy is excellent, as is JSA and Chingu.

some of the horrors are reasonable such as the one with that baby toshio in it.

two which have impressed me a lot recently are the "please teach me english" one, lots of laughs indeed and another called "the way home" which some people may find a bit slow and boring, but which compares how quickly korean society has changed in the last thirty years. a young, spoilt brat of a boy from seoul gets left with his deaf and mute grandmother who lives in a traditional house in the country and they have to learn to appreciate each other. great movie if you want to understand korea more in my opinion. ....

laters, Peter

Memories of Murder was a great watch. Pretty funny vignettes of korean police incompetence.

Oldboy....everything has already been said about this movie. It's my 2nd favorite after Memories of Murder. The new breed of Korean cinema (god knows it's about time!)

Spring Summer Autumn.....Has beautiful cinematography but a few flaws that put me off it a little. I didn't agree with putting the element of magic into it. Made me think I was watching a Chinese movie for a while.

I just saw Old Boy on Saturday with a friend of mine at a DVD bong. Honestly, I found it too disturbing to really enjoy it. I guess it just didn't turn my crank, so to speak, but hey, to each their own. Wink

I've only seen about 10 korean movies. But I've been pretty impressed.

Taegugki obviously is a good movie. I thought it was much better than silmido.

I watched oldboy without subtitles first, loved it. Then saw it with subtitles and thought the story was a bit contrived... go figure.

My little bride was a cute little movie. Although, it kind of wandered in the last half hour.

I'm surprised no one mentioned Happy End (not sure of the korean title) but it has the guy from old boy in it. It's a quite movie, but quite impressive. And a nice warning to all the cheating wives out there...

Shiri was okay, but for some reason i didn't find it very believeable.

Still need to watch chingu

At least part of that reason is probably

(oh, potential SPOILER if you haven't watched it yet and have a good memory for this kind of thing)

because plastic surgery doesn't work that way... you can alter your face to look more like a certain person, but to look exactly like them??? If that was possible, wouldn't there be way better celebrity look alikes out there?

Of course that wasn't the only reason it was hard to believe, but that part made me kind of annoyed...

That being said, I love Korean movies. No 3 favourites, although since I was an extra in Ȥ (Temptation of Wolves) I guess I have to put that one in my top 10. It just came out on video. Great cinematography and music, rather silly storyline with a lot of crying, and a very brief showing of one beautiful Canadian woman playing an Australian nurse. No lines, though. Darn. I did meet Kang Dong Won who is quite a familiar face these days, but he wasn't familiar to me at the time. Darn again.

Just curious, are the majority of you watching with or without subtitles? I only have a VCR and must watch without. Watched Taegugki, backwards last week. Still quite moving.....

Saw "Happy Ending". Thought it was great. Too bad the villain(woman) happened to be working at an English Academy though. Was impressed with the way they showed what lengths a woman would go to to have her sexual gratification. Couldn't get over the bit about how the lady arranged for her lover to met her husband at the Institute ( I think it was an ECC institute too)

There is another one out along those lines called "Crazy Marriage". Was recommended to me by a Korean female teacher who regretted it a little afterwards. It's the usual thing that happens in korean marriages. The girl falls in love wih some guy who doesn't have much money, and unfortunately is forced by tradition, parents and what have you to marry someone who is a bit more prominent in the community. As the story goes we see the girl seeking the passion she used to have and eventually moving back in with her old boyfriend. Of coure in meantime the boyfriend and the husband have become aquaintenances to the point where the husband discuses there marrital problems. Almost a take off of the movie of Hardy's "Jude"

I saw"Adress Unknown" and thought it was great. The guy playing the U.S. soldier did a good job, especially his portrayl of a foreigener who couldn't take living in Korea. Of course it afected his ability to make love to his korean girlfriend too. The bit about the guys stealing the main girls dog and trying to sell it to a restaurant cracked me up as well as did the guys using dogs for target practice with their bows and arrows

What's with Dr NO being a Korean Movie. Can't for the life of me remember anything in it being remotely related to Korea. Ian Flemming was an Englishman with no Korean blood, at least as far as I know.

Manchurian camdidate had a Korean twist in that GI's were kidnapped along the DMZ and brainwashed by Kim Il Sungs psychologists to return and kill the then U.S. President.

Mash of course was set in Korea during the Korean war

2. Old Boy- Enough has been said. If for anything, I choose this because of the huge build up in the laser-pointer/purple box/photo album scene... Good lord, the music, the camera, EVERYTHING = PERFECT in that scene. I was throwin' stuff around the room in my cathartic daze...

agreed. the soundtrack to that film was awesome. so awesome that i just had to purchase it! Laughing

another great buildup scene in the movie was...

(possible SPOILER ahead)

...was the high school flashback scene where we see a young daesu chasing the villain (name slips my mind) around the schoolgrounds. the cinematography coupled with the musical score made for a tense ride, as was the case with the laserpointer/purple box scene.
