Great thread. The OP is not ripping on any one individual for their mistakes. It is just a response to that other thread. Some people take way too much offense when non eshould be taken at all. If we can critisize others who are learning a foreign language then we surely are open to the same form of critisism. My Korean sucks but it will improve. Even this thread is helping me improve. Thanks Mithridates. And as far as Mithridates being conceited, that is a crock. As we all know learning languages is not easy. If I could speak a few I'm sure I would let people know about it. I have never got the impression he was bragging or putting himself above the rest of us. Lighten up guys.

Great thread. I had the same problem with carrefour. I speak korean pretty well, though my writing is shit. The first week i was in suwon and everyone was telling me about carrefour, so my friends and i decided to cab it there. We get in the cab, and i said in my best french accent, "Carrefour"�ο�.. "Carrefour"�¾�𿡿�?? (where is carrefour) replies the driver.. i tried to koreanize the word.. and i thought.. ��Ǫ was the way to go.. eventually he caught on.. "ahhh...�Ǫ!!!" that crap happens all the time.
As far as the OP being conceited, lighten up. The guy made an effort to learn the language, so have the 40 exchange students that are living here at my uni. Most of them can direct a cab now, order food, and say "������ ����" (lets go to the motel). If you guys are disgruntled about the language, take a class or two. It's amazing how quick people pick up on it.

Nice to speak a foreign language well. More people are less advanced of course. It is strange that you have to use the Korean way even when speaking English words. Or maybe not so strange. I guess it is done in all languages? I have heard the Chinese say western names, and it sounds nothing like what an English speaker would say.

I'd just like to thank all who typed out Carrefour in korean. I've heard it said so many times by Koreans and could never quite get what they were saying, I knew what they meant and where I had to get but now I can tell them I got there. Hurrah for me!

That would make sense, wouldn't it!
But, when I search under the one I typed you get almost 300 pictures on Google, and none for yours (even though it's closest to the proper pronunciation)...weird. I remember my current gf constantly telling me to pronounce his name the 'proper' way, ee wan mek gu ri gah

But then again I guess Moscow is weird compared to Moskva, and Paris is weird compared to Parii, we seem to be just as bad sometimes.

When I first started to learn Korean here I would do it down the local foreigner bar for a beer as well. Anyhow, it would irk me that all the time I would hear, why do you bother, Korean is useless, etc.etc.....

So nowdays, I just do it at home and I don't tell many other foreigners here that my Korean is coming along OK. A few know and I'll help them out but most foreigners attitudes suck.

Why are foreigners so down on others learning Korean????
