Look Beaver annoys a bit as well but he is just showing what is out there.
I know you have had a hard time adventureman but not everyone does you know. If I live here for 10 years teaching English I can think of much worse things to do with my life. I enjoy what I do mostly and in my opinion is much better than sitting in my native country feeling sorry for myself. |
Can't see anything about a hakwon here. Can you? |

Do i honestly consider teaching at a hagwon viable??.....no.
What teaching qualifications do I possess??....none - but I think I'm a damn good teacher and I work hard. So because i don't possess a teaching degree does that make me a bad teacher??? I've worked with people here with teaching degrees and they were some of the worst teachers(and people) I have ever met.
What are the educational standards at my hagwon piss poor. I'll admit to that but I do a lot of work to make up for the porr cirriculum.
The reason i stay here is the job is easy so it gives me plenty of time to explore other avenues.
For example, right now I'm
1. Studying Korean an hour a day which i find very enjoyable and my level is coming along well after 2 years of solid study.
2. Looking into masters programs in Asian politics which i find extremely interesting, where better to live than in Asia.
3. Having the time of my life travelling while at the same time have been in a relationship which has lasted 2.5 years with a wonderful woman who i would stay here for due to the fact that her job will kick the crap out of anything I'll ever do.
So basically, I'm enjoying life, working hard, expanding my horizons and developing my skills.
Get over yourself a bit, hey. I like it here and I can't see any reason to leave. Who knows what might happen, but if I keep expanding on those interests it is doubtful that i would be working in a hagwon in 10 years.

Let me add.
I've lived in Asia for about 4 years of my life.
I'm no expert and I wouldn't say Korea is the easiest country in the world to live in. However, there is no other country in the world I can live in that will pay me this amount of compensation for the hours I put in at the job.
This hagwon gravy train is not going to last forever. As a matter of fact I hope it stops and the system cleans up a lot. But it isn't like I'm sitting around bitching and moaning feeling sorry for myself. I'm setting myself goals and challanges which will help me later in my life and because i honestly do see my future here I'm doing things now while I can so i can live and work in this country without working in the hagwon system.
Look I know EPIC was rough for you adventureman by why did you sign on a 2nd. time. There are a lot of great hagwons to work for here. You lived here already, it shouldn't have been too hard to find one here.
You should have taken that step at the end of your year instead of taking up a 2nd. year at EPIC and then bitching and moaning about life in Korea and feeling sorry for yourself.
I seriously have little time for people(especially in your age group) who sit around looking forlorn when you just need to use a little initiative and get off your butt and make life happen. You did that by coming to Korea in the first place but what happened to make you stagnate all over again???
Korea-there are so many opportunities here to live and learn but most people just live in their own little sheltered worlds and look for excuses to their problems.
If you are in a bad situation...get out. |

Just wondering why people have to knock others. Any job is a good one if the person likes it. My ideal job may not be yours, and yours may not be mine. My pay may be lower or higher then yours, but who cares? I am happy in my job, and I know I can get more money some place else, but I love my job, love my school, and love my area. I think Just has a great job for 4 days a week. Some people make that much for 5 days and 30 hours. But she said its a good job. Some people like univ, some do not. some univ jobs are 12 hrs, and some are 20. Some give you housing and some do not. Some give you great vacation time, and some do not. Some treat you like crap, and some treat u like gold. So......if people want to stay in Korea one year or 20, to each his/her own. People, please do not think you are better then others. Let people be.
ANd Just....be happy at home. Do your Masters and carry your happy memories home. |

Ya, I was grumpy that day when I posted. There's no reason that I need to be defensive about my job and no reason I need to brag about it. It is what it is, I'm happy, and I'm also happy to be going home for a while.
I did the university job my first year in Korea. I'm the only person I know who worked uni and changed to a hakwon. I really enjoy the 10 to 12-year-olds. They're a lot of fun. 
Anyway, I just want people to know that there are good jobs out there, but probably most of them won't be advertised on this site (like my school would never advertise here). |

Hmm...that's not quite the same as saying, my uni job is better, but I fully recognize that 1.8 million, 5 hours a day, 4 days a week is much much better than most gigs out there.

It's usually seen that way unfortunately (and, to be sure, I do brag about my job). Mostly, however, when people ask questions like the one in the OP I'm suggesting that the person shoot for something a little higher than what the average hagwon offers. In non-message board life with people I've met and people I know I always encourage them to try for a university because, in my experience, university jobs aren't as difficult to get as people think and of all the teachers I know it's the university teachers that better off overall. |

Sent my resume to 114 schools in Gangnam, with a letter in Korean and a letter in English introducing myself. Got about 10 replies. |

There is no virtue in work for work's sake. Getting a job that pays more money for less work does not mean you automatically compromise your professional integrity, and is in fact seen as a smart move by sane people everywhere including those doing things decent and professional with their lives back home. As far as at least some of us are concerned being decent and professional is not a matter of geography and does not imply selling yourself short: quite the opposite in fact.
I don't want to disagree that there are plenty of drones looking for an easy ride out there, but that's their choice after all, and don't assume it of people. |
