Korean couples, rather than face the social stigma of living together, are adopting a "try before you buy" mode.
Articles in local newspapers site that recent trends of couples not legalizing a marriage with the government are becoming very popular. They have the wedding, and family/friends see the marriage, but if they don't certify the marriage with the goverment, they can divorce without all of the goverment mess too. A new law going into effect (next year, I think) which forces couples to have a "cooling off period" of maybe 6 months before a divorce can happen, won't help help things.
I also hear more and more Koreans saying:
"I loved my ex-bf, but we broke up because of his parents. He is married now, but they haven't had a baby. They must not be getting along well. I am waiting for them to divorce so I can be with him again."
Sounds crazy, but I hear this more and more! Have you ever heard a Korean say something like this?
Makes me wonder if they're already cheating, but hiding it. |

i don't understand how the boyfriend's parents would allow him to get back together with the first girl following divorce.
if they didn't allow it the first time, why would they allow it at all?
at any rate, i'm happy to hear times may be changing. divorce carries a huge stigma here... now if the kids could just find a way to say no to their parent's marriage arrangements in the first place. |

You are absolutely obsessed with Korean dating and mating rituals. Let it go, breath the air, relax, live your life ... |

Hey Derreck...That sounds like me right now. My ex-bf(the bartender) broke up with me becuase his parents don't like foreign gals. Well, this year we have been getting closer and he wants to go to Japan or LA sometime next year...I found out that he ws never married after all. He Tm'ed me twice today and I want him back...I never really stopped loving him since 2001. I had 2 boyfriends after him and they just didn't do it for me. I am wearing a pearl necklace he gave me during Chuseok...I still love him... |

I used to teach in a community college in Ohio. There were many older students. Many of the women were in what they called the 3-G program.
