My school is having problems getting new students. My coworkers and superiors are standing around with their thumbs up each others asses so I have taken it upon myself to get new students. But I have no idea what to do. Any ideas?
So you can help me out, heres some stats about my school:
*We teach all ages of kids and adults
*We have five branches scattered along the main train line in the area
*There are three native teachers and five japanese teachers who travel to the different schools teaching at one school a day
*We team teach...the japanese teacher for 30 min, a native teacher for 30 min
*The president is a tight ass so there isnt much money to be spent
Can you help me out?? thanks. |

Japanese teacher?
Anyhow, you could have some sort of offer where the students (if they're adults) could be your word-of-mouth advertisers.
If a student gets a person to come and sign up with your school, they could get a free lesson (or whatever you decide) as a reward. The only thing it would cost your school is a lesson.
Mind you, I dont know exactly how your school works. More detail would be appreciated. |

first of all, work a deal with your director so you get a 'commission' for each new student who enrolls.
advertising ideas:
-give out key chains, or erasers with the school name and particulars.
-handout flyers that advertise a promotion where your school will match any other advertised price from another school |

Here's a couple of ideas that might work:
1. Hold an "Open House - Western Day" where each of the teachers are a different occupation (doctor, grocery store clerk, pharmacist, etc) and advertise the day in the neighborhood. When a potential student comes in, they take a tour of the school, meeting all the teachers and practicing English (with the Korean teachers as interpreters as necessary). This does two things. It gets them into your school to see what it is like, and it gets them to meet your teachers...if they are treating this in a fun, easy going way (think humorous improve) and giving treats at each of the "stores" it might convince some kids to tell mom they want to go there.
2. Sort of the same ideas as the first...hold an open house - pot luck dinner day, where kids and parents can come in and eat and talk to the teachers and staff about what this school offers that is better than all the rest. Have each teacher cook their specialty including western dishes. My chili recipe (posted on the discussion board somewhere) is relatively inexpensive...and loved by all.

Cause its my job! The director also owns a very successful high school/college preparation school. Right now, the english school is losing money so its basically become a foreigner charity program. So if he closes down my school, he doesnt loose the money but I loose my job! |

Get a commission...thats funny.
Thanks for the ideas but...
President wont give money for the key chains or anything.
In the last two months, I have personally handed out over 3000 fliers in front of train stations, at elementary schools, at kindergartens, and on street corners. I put an additional 5000 fliers in peoples mail boxes. Didnt even get a single phone call. Every buisness in this country hands out fliers and most people dont give a damn about them...myself included. |

Now I realize you're in Japan, but I think you should take a cue from Korean advertisers and hire a couple of those dancing girls for a day. |

Thanks poet. We have four events a year where we invite the kids friends to ome etc. We had one two weeks ago for halloween. All the teachers dressed up in costume, we played some games and then took the kids trick or treating downtown to some shops that we had made arrangements with. We managed to get 80 kids to come BUT its the same 80 kids that come to every event! Most of them are our current students friends and/or siblings but they never come in for a model lesson! They come to the events, we give them candy etc. and then they go home, patiently waiting for our next event. I think that if we could advertise these events better, we could get different kids to come who might actually be interested in our school, not just our fre candy. |

Rule #2: Not caring for the buisness aspects of your school when it is in desperate need of students will result in you losing your job and having to find a new one before your visa expires and you have to leave the country. |

Is it that difficult to find a job that you have have to take over core business responsibilities?
Don't flog a dying horse and use the time you have left to find yourself a new position. If that fails buy one of the schools with a use now pay later scheme and run it yourself! That's if you've got any cred and/or cash. |
