He told the director he would only produce the books if he was allowed to retain ownership of the finished master.
The copy he gave to the director is unreadable on the director's computer and just barely readable on my friend's computer.

I'm certainly not an expert with computers so I don't understand this. |
This is just a hardware thing and something of a software thing. The school's computer is about 3 years old. My friend's computer is less than a year old, with parallel processors and it takes 20 minutes to read the document and convert it to a word file.
The school's computer doesn't have the hardware to handle the document nor does it have the proper reader to convert the file to a readable word document.
He was pretty good at securing his book and ensuring he is the only source of the printed material. |

Derrek, sorry that i can't offer more than others have above me; it is a common cultural thing here, which flies right against our 'normal' attitudes.
What I CAN advise you is to get a copy or 3 for yourself; they can be VERY useful in getting a new position, & should be a part of your portfolio. If i was in the job hunt again, I have copies of the books I helped to write & edit, cd & dvd copies of my voice & video work, & a vc of clips from tv, news interviews, etc. that I have done. A mm version of your portfolio puts you head & shoulders above any other candidates, & opens things up for uni positions & corp jobs in other fields, as well.
I think you are out of luck on compensation at this point (consider the fact the Koreans who worked on it aren't even allowed to be upset!!!), but it can be leverage/occupational lubricant.
My sympathy & regards,
Glen |

Having quite extensive knowledge in both the computer end and book publishing end of things, I can only conclude that your glasses are of the incorrect perscription because I can certainly see through the bullcrap you are posting. |

Welcome to the Korea Condition. Miscommunication. You thought hey they want me to do something it does not sound serious and urgent I am doing it for free and should take a resonable albiet slow time to get done.
As to pay that would have been better if you had hashed it out earlier.
You seem forwarned about this CNN class. Prepare now to get paid for any extra work.
Overall I say you might have to take this one up the yinyang but this can prepare you for the next time they try this.
Also it sounds like you want some reconition for your hardwork not the hassles and that you got. You may have to be blunt koreans do not understand this value of thanks.

| This sounds so stupid. Yes, they should have paid you something, but really this sounds like you are being smalll about it. You should have asked about money before it was done. Remember, anytime they did something to help you, even little things, they remember. Try to keep things friendly....it is easier for you. They can always get another teacher, but you can't always get another reasonable boss. |
