Yeah Christmas seems like not such a big deal here when you have no family around you.

Yes, it seems premature to be looking that far ahead for a holiday, but there are no breaks at all in November, and that just doesn't seem right. Surely these bali-bali people need one long weeked in November, and so could we waygook use one; call it National kimchi-apppreciation day, call it anything; clearly the uni students are aching for a holiday, not that they've earned one, but those of us who have chosen to teach them certainly deserve a long weekend during the declining days of autumn, if for no other reason than to experience the glorious autumnal colors for which Korea is 'famous'. Or just to stay home, deal with the laundry and the shopping, and have the luxury of kicking back to watch 'Jeopardy'. Pleasures in this country are few, and if one is ultimately alone here, those autumn leaves are not as colorful if they're not enjoyed by two. This is when melancholy can kick in, and that's why there ought to be a holiday around this time.

Just call in sick.

If they want a doctor's excuse, tell them to *beep* off.

When I don't want to go to work, I take a sick day.

Anyway, Koreans should adjust to our holidays if they want us to work for them. Simple.

When Koreans ask me why I get Saturdays off, I just say that if I didn't I would be in Canada right now. I don't love teaching English in a foreign country that much.

in my part of Canada, from the afternoon of Dec 24 to January 1 is essentially a holiday, unless you're unfortunate enough to work in retail.

Is holidays on Christmas Eve a cultural thing?

I don't know any one (except my brother's German in-laws) in Australia who has a holiday on Christmas eve or celebrates Christmas on Christmas eve.

You're lucky if you get to knock off work at lunch time (private industry), but don't be surprised if you work until regular business closing hours.

I've never thought of Christmas Eve as being a holiday.
