|
|
Here's a situation.
Started a basic hagwon job last month on October 20th.
Pay rate 2.0 million.
Bosses say they will pay my first months payday only for the days showed up to work, which was "eight days." (I had thought since I was with the school from Oct. 20th that means I was with them for 12 days for the month of October, but ok. The 8 days is 20th thru 22nd, then 25 thru 29.)
Question: how are these first eight days calculated? And then, how much should my first pay day be?
Should 2,000,000 won be divided by 31 (days) to calculate a daily rate, or
should 2,000,000 won be divided by 20 (work days in Oct)? The 2.0 won gets divided by all days in the month, or by the workdays in the month?
Need to get this right as I'll be talking with the boss about this first thing on Tuesday evening. I'm not looking to stick it to them hard but at the same time don't want them to get away with any fast ones. Being as this is my first payday in awhile I need what money is mine. Isn't anything regarding daily pay in the contract but want to go by what is standard.
How did you guys calculate your first month's pay? |

quick addition: one of those eight work days was actually a visa run for the whole day, and I'll give it to them they did pay for the trip (air) as well as the actual visa cost as well. By standard, should the visa trip day be counted as a regular pay day or not? On the one hand it took up my day, however I wasn't at the school. Just looking for what is standard. |

The difference between the two formulas is 12,500 Won. That token amount is not worth rocking the boat over.

There is no standard, but I know more people who have had it paid, unpaid, paid but then the cost of hiring a teacher for the day docked from their salary, and even having it being treated as a vacation day.
But just like back home, you are suppose to deal with these things before and not after. And confronting someone over what you view as being a bad deal is likely to end with a poisoned well. |

My first pay check was calculated as: Monthly salary divided by 30 days multiplies by the days I had worked. I thought it would be actual teaching days but I got paid for everyday since I had started (including the 3 days for Chuseok). If they are only paying you for the days you were at work though I'd get them to divide your monthly salary by the total "working" days in that month. |

Let's see, using the OP's information:
2,000,000/31=64,516 won per day
2,000,000/20=100,000 won per day
The difference per day then is:
100,000 - 64,516= 35,484 won per day
How did you come up with 12,500?
Over 8 days this is 35,484 * 8=283,872
I think that might be worth the OP's time to ensure the calculation is done properly Gord.
To the OP, what does your contract mention about your schedule? Do you work Saturdays? If so that may affect the calculation. You still would do well to ask the director how they plan to calculate your pay.
The visa run...that's something else you've got to discuss. Maybe they will pay you for the day and then again, they may not.

Someone above has already mentioned this, but just to add my support -
If they are only going to pay you for days where you're at work (ie no week-ends), the monthly salary has to be divided by the number of working days.
They can't say, "We divide by 30 because it's a monthly salary", but then only pay you for 22 out of the 30 days. |

Do they not have weekends in your neighborhood?

Would you like some help doing the calculations?
2M/31=65
2M/21=95
65x12=780
95x8=760
Or in exact coinage, 774,194 Won verses 761,905 prior to deductions. A difference of 12,289 Won. |

I think what he's figuring out is that if they divide by 31, they have to pay for 31 days, ie. the weekends too. Of course, I count 21 working days in October, but maybe you're using a different counting period. This calculation is assuming working 5 days per week.
So...2.000.000/21 (working days) = 95.238/day (rounded down)
2.000.000/31 (total days) = 64.516/day (rounded down)
8 working days * 95.238 = 761.904 won
12 total days * 64.516 = 774.192 won
The difference is...12.288 in favor of the total days.
There's your difference of 12.000 won. Either way, just suck it up and take it if it's at least 750.000. You don't really want to get into a big fight over a few thousand won the first month. If he really tries to screw you by offering 500.000, then show him the math. But if he's fair, don't worry about a few won.

there are so many ways you can look at this, but..........
Some schools deduct the day or days they sent you on the visa run
Some schools give you cash also for when you are in japan, some do not.
Some pay you on your anniversary day, some do not.
I would at this point just accept what they say. Just in the future have things discussed beforehand.
This is a new job for you. Don't sweat it.
Hope the job is a good one. |

I had a similar problem recently where my boss was insisting to me that Koreans work out their pay by dividing 30.
Rubbish...hold your ground...You didnt work for them at the weekend! |
