I enjoy my job most of the time. My Wanjangnim treats me with repect and honesty. I don't have to kill myself with long hours and I have weekends off. My apartment is nicer than anything I could afford back home. I can also save money better in Korea than at home. I like teaching in general.
Having said this: I will never teach at a hagwon again. It is too frustrating dealing with children that misbhave and refuse to study. Also, I am better at teaching adults who have a more solid English background and life experiences to talk about. From here on out it will be back to college level teaching.
I think that hagwons have improved a lot over the last five years. It is very competitive and new schools open up every month. The Korean government has learned about its horrible reputations and made changes (China, Japan, and Thailand attracted more qualified teachers for awhile). Hagwons have become more organized and diverse in strategies. Of course, there are so many exceptions to the rule. However, hagwons have improved overall in the past 5 years. |
