sometimes one has to talk BS and tough to get their point across.
I always try and help people and expect nothing in return EXCEPT that the person I help will help someone else down the road. Teachers in korea always seem to be getting the shaft from hakwon owners...maybe they bring it upon themselfs...who knows. But...talking tough does not mean this person is bad. Straight shooter...he wants no BS it seems. |

No, it means he wants someone to come over and then they can pimp them out to other jobs under a tourist visa. "Sorry, no uni jobs this week which is really quite odd, but you can work at these two pre-schools in the morning, a couple multi-subject academies in the afternoon, and then maybe some other work in the evening" with the plan being because such jobs pay more than regular jobs a person won't mind their dream university job didn't come through. And as an added bonus, such jobs pay a higher recruiting fee as an overall so he makes more money.
Unless there is some other Korea I don't know about where no one applies for university and college jobs and they are hiring 365 days a year.

I'd say that if you were planning on coming over here on your own dime anyway, that you'd have nothing to lose by meeting this guy. As long as you keep your options open, don't give him your documents, and have other interviews set up, then I don't see any reason why you shouldn't meet him.
He may very well be completely full of it. The same goes for any recruiter or employer that you meet over the net. Good luck! |

There is something highly suspicious about this guy. If he is just going to give out uni contacts once you get here, he could just as easily give them to you now.
I'd put a block on his e-mail and forget him. |

Just yesterday a guy got busted for teaching at a reasonably well known school with not one, but two fake degrees, a pile of plagiarized articles, and an apartment full of weed.
I think it's gonna be a lot harder to get a university gig in the near future. |

Am I the only one that finds it suspicious that this charitable guy is going thru the resumes at Pusanweb or Dave's and emailing people out of the blue?
If you buy this new twist on the same, old routine that recruiters do, and come over on a tourist visa, make sure that you have a lot of other stuff that you are lining up to visit, as well.
He reeks of suspicion. And if Korean recruiters spoke english as well as he does, they'd be approaching you from angles that he is doing, too.
That last email was a crock. 'You caught me on a good day', 'take it or leave it', then dropping swears to show how laidback and relatable he is. You think a charitable person would write like that? Read it again and look for the good-natured, helping demeanor come across in his email.
I give him credit for having some indirect salemanship in an industry known for it's direct, force-down-the-throat style, but he's not as good at sales as he thinks. But he's better than the amateurs that populate most of the biz. |

I agree with the above posters, I have been Some to a good deal of help to a bunch of people, just helping them know what theys hould be looking for in terms of pay, hours, vacation, location, and sometimes helping them actually find jobs. It never upsets me when they ask questions, and I never guarantee they will get or like any job that sounds good to me. If someone is getting that defensiive, it means they are not all that confident abotu what they are "selling."
If you need help keep looking over contracts and ask people on this and other boards.
The other side of this is, you can (if you bring a little expenses money) show up in Korea and get a job better than the vast majority of those posted online, so were you to show up, and then meet him somewhere reasonable (not ain a back alley, his house, or your hotel room), then you could at least listen to what he has to offer. I would bring a friend though. In general, his tone is suspicious, and he is disrespectful of your common sense distrust of a stranger telling you to just show up in a foreign country. |

| There's plenty of people already here who don't need to buy their own ticket that he could hook up if he wanted to. If you're planning to fly over anyway you've nothing to lose by meeting him, but if not you have no guarantees. Maybe not much to lose either? |

At the beginning of reading this thread, I wasn't sure what to think. But I got to thinking about two things:
1) If I were offering help out of the goodness of my heart to some total stranger, would I waste my time sending email after email trying to talk the person into it? No way. I'd be like, "Fine, you don't trust me. That's understandable. After all, you don't know me. Anyway, I tried, good luck." I mean, he doesn't seem very undertanding of your reluctance to trust him, which should be very understandable to any rational human being.
2) If you posted your resume on Dave's, then only paying customers can access it, because here you need to buy a special recruiting membership to view posted resumes. So how did this guy get to see your resume unless he is a professional recruiter? He bought a membership just to help one person out? Very suspect IMO. |

I thought of PMing customX for contact info but when I think about it...Why? (OK custom PM it--I'm in China-close enough to contact him.)
As some have pointed out it's so obviously untrue that you need to be awfully suspicious. |

Would I "want" his help? If I was a newbie...I'd want ALL the help I could get and then some! Oldtimers know the ropes.
I'd also make sure up front...right from the get go as to this person's motives. Maybe he does get money for steering someone to a school. Does that make him/her bad? Come on now...WHY do YOU work? Why does anyone work?
MONEY!
What does anyone have to lose by his help? If he is a conman...posting on ESL WEB sites will ruin his future! |
