| Heading out overnight to Gyeongju this weekend. Anyone there care to tell us a little about it. I've been there a lot because I live about 15km down the road from it. But, I've never stayed overnight. Looking for nice night spots, some foreigners and the usual sorta stuff. |

Whatever you do, whatever you read, no matter how many other foreigners you see going there, DON'T, I repeat DON'T, stay at Inn Daewon. The place is an overpriced dump.
A much cooler place to stay is SarangChae. It's a traditional Korean house transformed into an inn/hostel. All ondol bang, some with private toilets. Common room with kitchen, free breakfast, TV and free Internet. Owner speaks good English and can tell you some good spots for eating and drinking. 25,000 with shared bath / 30-35 with private bath, depending on the size of the room. Next to the Wonsong/Wonsol (sp?) Tomb Park. You know, the big park off the main drag.
I highly recommend it. |

Are you going to rent a bicycle and tour around?
Downtown is around the McDonald's. They have McKyongju Burgers.
Around the stone observatory tower, the big lawns with some of the lawns and the Kim family land/birthplace or whatever that is, there was some 'pay money and shoot bows and arrows' set up. This is all next to the Museum, around the 'fort hump'. The other side of the hump from the museum, where the river is, you can swim. Where the old stone footings for the ancient bridge are. All around the 'fort hump', where it angles down among the trees and erosion from the slope, are ancient ceramic shards. Pick 'em up, have a look, drop 'em. It's pretty cool.
If you get towards the 'holy mountain' there's the old palace grounds. And the only remaining thing, perfectly preserved, is the set of basins that make a loop drinks in boats were floated around. Leisure party thing in the garden. I guess the rest of the stone was hauled off to build other things. I GUESS it remains because it's a symbol (warning) of why Shilla fell. Too much partying. |

Cheers chaps. On the weekends though I've seen a lot of those ones. Actually last time we were out the the GF and I found this nice Botanical garden that has very few visitors. Great for a picnic. Can't wait till next Summer.
Anyhow... The real question is ex-pat bars and stuff for the evening tide. I think we're just going to go to Gyeongju World for Saturday then stay overnight. |

| Expat bars, I dunno. But if you're satisfied with general nightlife, eating and drinking, the area around Dongguk University was quite good. A 10 minute walk or shorter cab ride from the train station/main shopping area. |

I would love to ride a bike around Bomun lake and out to the the temple.
One of the only places in this country where bike riding is possible. |
