What I really wonder, is why are they called "Peppero"?
Is it because they resemble pepperoni sticks?
If that's the case then it makes the whole thing stupid even more so.
Or is there some other reason to them being called "Peppero"?
please enlighten me. |

If you want to use your critical thinking skills then wonder why the op (me) spells it "pepero" while many of the posters spell it like it had something to do with peppers. It doesn't. In fact the pronunciation is quite different if you do it right. "pe-pe-ro"
The soju tonight might be making me belligerent but... Am I the only one who gets more annoyed with foreigner attitudes toward things Korean than towards things Korean? I mean, just listen to yourself sometimes. I just shake my head. Why isn't it so obvious?

I don't criticize it because it is Korean, if the same thing was happening in Australia or Belize I would think the same thing.
I just don't like obvious marketing gimmicks, brilliant though it may be. |

| I don't believe the name, Pepero, has anything to do with peperoncino, though the snack itself is reminiscent of something from maybe Italy or France. |

Yeah, but at least they're not co-opting religious holidays to sell their crappy crap. I'm thinking along the lines of Christmas and to a lesser degree Easter. |

The kids seemed to have lots of fun. Don't forget they're just kids, I don't see why you should be irritated about it. Are you irritated by Christmas, Halloween, Easter, Valentines Day, Mother's Day, and Father's Day? If you aren't then you're a bloody hypocrite.
I'm stoked, pepero is exactly the same as Japanese Pocky and has always been one of my favourite snacks. I received over 100 pieces!!! |

Anyone know if Japan has a Pocky Day? Whatever company manufactures them there could try it. Seeing as the Japanese are just as susceptible to this type of hive-mind marketing glurge. |

I was wondering if Pepero Day is so similiar to Valentines Day will Pepero be incredibly cheap tomorrow (like V-day candy is in the US on Feb 15) ? If so I'll buy a ton to give to my Friday classes and look like a saint  |

Yes, you ARE wrong.
I've nothing against kids having fun. Does it have to be part of an insidious marketing campaign to have FUN though?
Do kids (or their parents) have to buy some product plugged by a huge corporation in order to have fun?
Does the Lotte company really care if the kids have fun, or is it all about profit?

I'm not irritated by those holidays per se, but yes- I most definitely am disgusted with the commercialism that surrounds them. Call me a grinch, but a couple of my neighbours put up Xmas lights on Nov. 1st and it left me flabbergasted.
