For the last several years, while workers at private firms received pay raises averaging 5 to 7 percent, government employees' salary increased by 7 to 12 percent.

It's a valid point, but by the same token, teachers who work hard year after year (saving their employers on recruitment fees, flights, hassle etc) so seldom get rewarded for it here and in most of the ESL world.

Right, but truth is, the perceived value of international English teachers falls a little every year in my view.

Sid,
You speak for the few.

I am sure you have tenure and receive all the benefits of your Korean colleagues. You probably even have a permanent resident visa.

It's been pointed out many times by me and others....wages will remain low anywhere in the ESL industry as long as teachers keep signing contracts offering low wages. It's that simple.
Same in korea...wonjanim KNOWS that YOU will sign a contract! Judging from the amount of teachers in korea....wonjanim is correct! So they will pay low wages!
Oh...Oh...Oh...wouldn't it be nice if teachers didn't sign contracts until the wages went up! Wonjanim thinks..."I don't want to hire you...I can get another teacher to do the samething for cheaper."
I Know a few schools where the FT's did band together and didn't resign (one school had 5 FT's another had 6) and they told all new applicants to not sign. They all did get raises and stayed on another year. But...that is the exception.
Hakwon owners and most korean businesses pay cheap...they know someone will work for them.
If koreans would only smarten up....if...a big wish...anyway...if they did...and started paying employees decent wages...productivity would CLIMB! And wonjanim and all the other business would make more money! Weed out the employees who slack off or expect others to carry their load and hire better employees.

Well, at least with the exchange rate it's as if I got a 200,000 won raise over what it was a few years ago. 1,350 to the dollar for awhile there.

S. Korean workers' monthly wage grows 6.6 pct in 2005
South Korean workers' monthly wages rose nearly 7 percent in 2005 from a year earlier as the economy recovered gradually from a two-year slump, a government report said Sunday. An average South Korean worker earned 2.4 million won (US$2,482) a month last year, up 6.6 percent from the previous year, according to the Labor Ministry report.

Salaries usually go up due to increased experience.

Remember, schools are not paying for your experience and your teaching abilities, they are paying for your white face.

Your teaching may get better after a year, but your whiteness doesn't increase (well for most people it doesn't) so why should schools pay you more.

My whiteness increased after I came to Korea. I had great sun tan before I got here and now I've never been so white in my life. Laughing

God I miss good beaches and especially, surfing everyday.

There has been no evidence posted here to show that salaries in the ESL industry are frozen, going up or going down. It seems to be based on individual perceptions.

Our recruiter tells us that salaries have gone up slightly in the last year. About 5% or 6%. Everyone at our hogwan is making more money. We plan to pay new teachers more money.

So, are all of you making the same money or less? Or is everyone just worrying about those other guys who can't make more?

Oldtimers often dont have to work as hard as a newb for several reasons. They know the job, they have been doing it for years and can achieve the same, if not better, results as the newb in considerably less time.

Unmotivated? Just how motivated are you supposed to be after doing the same job at the same company for unpteen years? Often a job has few if any surprises left in it. You show up, you do your work and you go home, repeat.

Often newbs come into a job full of fire and enthusiasm and ignorance. They run around like chickens with their heads cut off and everybody goes "wow is he ever motivated". Yes he is motivated...motivated to find out how to do the job properly and not get fired.

Its a perfect example of agism. Young people often complain about the older ones because the older ones pace themselves, know what they are doing and the timeframe in which it needs to be done.

Sort of a racism against the older people.

Remember with age comes wisdom...(usually Laughing ) Just because they arent running around with the same energy as the newb doesnt mean they arent working as hard....it just means they are working smarter!
