I teach in a boys school so most of my classes the problem is getting 40+ boys to be queit rather than coaxing them into talking. However I have a couple of classes that are really queit classes where maybe a few students will talk I have been trying something new with these classes.

I ask for one volunteer and then after they have been called on they get to choose the next person. The reason that my students love it is that it gives them a chance to drop their friends in the hot seat. I also sometimes drop a talker some candy as an added incentive so they never know if they are going to get a chance to answer. The only rule I have is that the same students can't be chosen repeatedly.

It's been really working well and I'm finding that I'm getting a wide variety of students talking in class because of it. Granted I have big classes so I'm sure how well it would work in the smaller ones but just an idea to keep in mind.

Put them in Teams. Have each group come up with a team name that they will keep for the entire month. For aach class a different leader must be chosen. That person will be whom gives you the answers that day. You can then assign points to the group based on correct answers or behaviour. At the end of the month, you then award them prizes. I gave out two prizes each month. One for correct answers, one for behaviour, that way a group that isn't good that good in English can aim for the other award.

It works really well, b/c the students will encourage or persuade their teammates to spit out the answers. Though, sometimes the noise level gets to be a drawback.
