Ok, I don't actually mind some spitting on the street, and I do it myself if I just have something that needs to get expelled. But, as I'm typing this at a local PC bang, the Korean guy sitting next to me just hacked up a loogey and spat on the floor for the 3rd time in 20 minutes. Evil or Very Mad

Spitting on the floor is bad. But what gets me is when people spit in ashtrays. I'm sorry, but it just seems so much worse when girls do it. I was sitting with some ladies I met the other day and this one girls spat in the tray (that others were using) so many times. Its gross when a guy does it but for some reason it just seems so much worse when an attractive lady does it.

He spits on the floor because he doesn't like 'you' because you are a honky white caucasian 'invader'. It's not some abhorent 'Korean trait' taken to an extreme, THAT guy doesn't like you. And he doesn't even know you, he's 'racist'. So what. He needs a vacation, to leave Korea, to take up yoga. It's more fun, however, for him to get a jolly out of making you feel uncomfortable and 'threatened'. He ought to like opera but he prefers WWF.

C'mon, people: embrace the culture!

At Suwon station yesterday, I had some ice cream: real phlegm-inducing stuff. Afterwards, I felt the need.
So I scratched up, took a deep breath, bent at the knees, and let fly. The pink, fluid barbell end-over-ended to almost the opposite platform.
Sure, a couple of bystanders were shocked. But at least I spit like a grownup. That drooly business I see most of the time is juvenile.

Hmmm, i have another observation,

koreans are extremely motivated with 'expelling'.

i was invited to a pub with my uni students at the end of last year. the place was only patronized by students.
from the minute i walked in, i noticed slime all over the floor.

then i realised where it was coming from. all the macho young soju drinkers, on the brink of vomit, were bent over their chairs slowly hanging big gobbers from their mouths.

the door, and fresh cool air were a few meters away, yet they chose to drop a few dribblers at the foot of their chair. they said it calmed their need to throw up and they could drink more.

I live in a brand new building, yet every time I get on the elevator there's gobs of gooey slime on the floor and also vomit stains (usually on weekends).

It is such an attractive aspect of Koreans, expectorating when ever and where ever they please. It still amazes me that after nearly four years here, I still find it a disgusting habit. Smile

All the North Koreans I met swear that people don't do that there, unless they're drunk in which case they are forgiven. It's one of the interesting issues that might come up if reunification is ever achieved (which I'm not holding my breath for). Babaric phlegm-spitting, hair-dyeing face altering rich southerners!

I once shared an elevator with a high-school male who had obivously just eaten some really spicy Shin Ramyeon. He spat a significant puddle of red saliva onto the elevator floor. I couldn't comprehend the vulgarity of it.

In Tawian, where I taught for two stints, some people, quite a few, chew betel nut. So they chew and chew and get the effect/buzz/ephedrine-like qualities, and spit out the dark ochre red drool. Into a paper cup they carry for the purpose if they're in a public place, like a pcbang. On the sidewalk are splats of what looks like dark ochre paint.

The spitting is disgusting. One thing I really can't stand though is people who help their children urinate on the sidewalk or in a trash can. They drop their kids pants right in the middle of the sidewalk and help them pee. It's so classless. It's not like a washroom isn't within a 2 minute walk at most.

Disgusting.
