New round of protests planned
A month-long tour of candlelight vigils in front of U.S. installations throughout Korea was launched yesterday near the U.S. Embassy in downtown Seoul. The organizer is the Pan-Korean Committee of civic groups, which staged last winter's series of vigils to protest the deaths of two Korean girls killed by a U.S. military vehicle.
"Nearly one year has passed since the two teenage girls' deaths, but the Status of Forces Agreement between South Korea and the United States has not been revised," a representative of the committee said.
On June 13, 2002, two Korean girls walking along a road were struck and killed by an armored vehicle during a training exercise. The driver and the track commander of the vehicle were court-martialed on charges of negligent homicide, but found not guilty. The acquittals triggered anti-American sentiment throughout Korea. |

Just another example of Korean overreaction to everything.
What else could anybody expect? |

Heh, Roh's already in the doghouse with the current US administration, 2ID's going to pack up and move further south, and they decide that this is the perfect time to flare up some new protests?
Give 'em enough rope, I guess. |

What I love about this is that supposedly we robbed them in the olympics, but they'll never admit to the 1988 olympics in Seoul when Roy Jones Jr. absolutely got robbed of the gold by some Korean fighter that he'd destroyed.
Yep, Roy Jones Jr.; quite possibly pound for pound the best fighter in the world from the past 50 years, and one of the few fighters that has gained weight strictly to move up from middle weight to heavy weight and win the heavy weight title got beaten by some no-name Korean chump.
Right.... |

Basically it came down to the fact the fight was easily Jones'. By every measure that a boxer could win a fight (most punches landed, most knockdowns, least times hit) he'd won. Surprise, surprise, the South Korean judge just throws the usual point scoring method out the window and gives the Korean fighter 10's for every round. It was a travesty, and this is something that basically every boxing fan around the world will readily admit, but you'll never hear a South Korean admit that it was a BS decision. |

Actually, there is video tape of inproprieties by the Korean Judges (bribery) I can't find it though.
I remember that fight vividly. It was, at the time, considered one of the worst travesties in olympic history!!!! |

Is it really going to bad here... I've still got fresh memories I've been shoved and shouted at by some guy in the subway station in march with rah raha migook rahaha 'f**K america"... hoping just a random person and not something that is likely to be on the increase due to this incident.

What kills me is that Korea has the second highest accident rate in the world and LOTS of kids die every year in car accidents. Maybe the USA is right to consider pulling out, Koreans burn American flags, insult foreigners they think are Americans and rip EVERYBODY off!
I wonder how long SK would last if the USA did pull out? At the very least, the 6% tax rate would rapidly become double digit! Koreans have made shooting yourself in the foot an artform!

How was it that it was permitted? Why was there no protest then to get it turned around like the one after the French figure skating judge was caught fixing the results last year?
Getting back to the original topic, Hank has a good point. This is not a good time for another flareup. The one last year was at the least convenient, and at most, encouraged by the ruling party in order to get Noh elected. Now that he's in, the protests are an annoyance to the government, which is currently in suck-up mode to the US.
I don't think large-scale protests will be permitted, especially in light of the the increased sentiment in the US to say frig the Koreans and bring them all home.
On the other hand, there will be a bunch of bored students with more time than braincells out on summer vacation. |

dont want to get too off topic but to clarify the Jones fight, when E Germany fell in 1990 and the Stasi records were opened it was discovered that the E Germans bribed the judges for that fight one of a number fixes set up by the E germans
BTW that Olympics had a Korean fighter who thought he won only to have the decision go the other way sit in the ring in protest for like an hour, everybody left and they turned off the lights and he just sat there, remember NBC and Marv Albert kept going back to it. That guy is considered a hero in Korean boxing circles now I read |

Exactly Hank... Whenever that stupid Ohno thing comes up, I bring up Ray Jones Jr. and the '88 Olympics. All I get is blank stares or denials, or some other BS that brushes it aside. Korean logic at its best. |

It is, in my opinion, very unlikely the government will allow anything like what happened last year go on this year. Korea is still dealing with the economic fallout and money is all that really matter to most Koreans. The demonstrations last year got Pyongyang's man elected and the mobs are no longer useful to Comrade Noh.I have been following Voice of People and have noticed that they are not getting many hits anymore. Voice of People is the mouthpiece of PSPD, the ultra-nationalist "NGO" that caused all the trouble last year.
As a VERY interesting aside, internet new portal OhMyNews (aka OhMyLies) has now turned against Comrade Noh. They were his biggest supporter last year and he gave his first post election interview to them. They were livid that Comrade Noh sucked ass so hard in his Washington trip, agreeing 100% to the US agenda. Washington rewarded him with a news confrence and a vague promise to not move 2ID.
You can bet that any new hate orgy will set 2ID on the road pretty fast. |
