Yep you can now download Gmail with any POP email software e.g. Outlook Eudora, Calypso etc
This means one major issue can be circumvented. In another thread

Well they can't any more if you don't let them. Enabling POP means that I can choose to simply use Gmail as a forwarder to Outlook and change my settings in Gmail to delete mail there once it is forwarded.
This is pretty cool. It basically means that I can choose whether or not to archive my mail either online with Google or on my hard disk privately. I choose both as a back-up but it means that I can move any material I deem to be "sensitive" to my own private hard drive.
Going POP also means I don't have to wait for Gmail to enable rich text on line formatting of new mail. I can now do this in Outlook and send using Gmail SMTP.

gmail now offers pop access as part of the program. Just check your settings. I got mine all set up yesterday. |

Watch out though... I just got burned by this:

They are working on this and it will be the icing on the cake when they do enable it. |

hang on though, isn't the whole point about gmail that you get 1 gig of storage- so if you're just going to direct it to your hard drive, you might as well have a hotmail account. |

There's a lot of good reason to go with gmail pop:
Hotmail I believe doesn't give you the option to move emails from their server to your HD and delete them from the server automatically. You have to keep cleaning things up. When your gf is mailing you naked pictures of herself all the time, that can be a real problem.
If you want to read the emails via your pop client but leave them archived on the gmail server, 1 gig is better than hotmails 250 megs.
You can still get a cool name on gmail (I snatched gokorea and eslseoul). Hotmail, well, try [email protected].
Gmail might have better spam catching. Hotmail has gotten a lot better in the last year, however. |

Additionally hotmail will stop pop access support from April next year. |

Mr James... actually the reason for storing your mail on your hard drive would be privacy not really because of capacity.
Mr Hero?MindMeToo... that's a bummer for Hotmail lovers becuase you can in fact set up hotmail to download via POP and delete it from Hotmail. The settings for this are in your email software options. In Outlook this is
Tools > Email Accounts > More Settings > Advanced tab
where you'll see an option to delete from or leave on server for any number of days you specify. |

Disturbingly, they already have if you're just setting up Outlook or Outlook Express now. If it's already set up, you're good to go until next spring. Try and set it up now and you'll see that they want you to pay. They did this about two months ago. |
