the "race to get the right answer". oftentimes i'll be doing an exercise that's a multiple choice - 10 blanks, 10 possible answers.
this creates a situation where i have 5 kids yelling out random words to fill a blank in a sentence as if i've said "i'm thinking of a number between 1 and 10" and refusing to even attempt to process context...
they have no concept of learning by thinking or making mistakes. the stakes seem too damn high for them socially to make a mistake, yet their attitude now forces them into so many more grave ones.

nope the main concern should be profit. The hogwons should deliver a quality product for an affordable price. Personally I don't think that many do. I think that quite a few hogwons are penny wise and dollar foolish. Also not many koreans are too concerned with quality if they can make money off of poor quality stuff.
If a hogwon came up with the best education system using computers and qualified teachers etc etc, then very few people would be able to afford it. The cost would be prohibitive. Also if the students weren't interested in learning english then they still wouldn't learn well. |
What you say may be valid, but I was thinking more in the direction of:
A teacher should care about teaching.
A doctor should care about healing.
A business owner should care about what they are selling. |

| From what I see, these are problems with Korea in general. The attitude at my school towards English is ambivalent at best, but it seems that way with most subjects. The teachers rearrange the student's schedule so they can go on a group hike to see the fall colors. |
