MTRANS MONORAIL PROJECT IN GANGNAM, SOUTH KOREA

On 8 September 2004, MTrans, through its two subsidiaries Monorail Malaysia Technology Sdn Bhd (MMT) and KL Infrastructure Group Berhad (KLINFRA), signed an Agreement with Gangnam District, Seoul City, to establish a joint venture company to develop a 6.7 km monorail system in Gangnam on a privatization basis.

Gangnam has conducted extensive studies for 5 years and has chosen MTrans Monorail as the most suitable technology for its city.

The monorail system, costing USD175 million, will be based on MTrans Monorail which was implemented for KL Monorail in Kuala Lumpur.

KL Monorail has operated successfully since August 31, 2003 and has carried more than 10 million passengers in its maiden year. The proposed system will provide better mobility in Gangnam and will complement the extensive subway system currently serving Gangnam and Seoul, a city of more than 10 million people. Major Korean conglomerates have their headquarters in Gangnam which is the commercial and financial district of Seoul with a population of 550,000 people.

MTrans is one of only three urban transit monorail manufacturers in the world. The other two are Hitachi of Japan and Bombardier of Canada. MTrans is currently involved in proposals for monorail systems in twelve countries with potential value of USD5 billion.

Signing on behalf of Gangnam District is Mayor Kwon Moon Yong and on behalf of MMT and KLINFRA is David Chew, the Chairman of MTrans. MMT will be the designated turnkey E&M supplier and KLINFRA will be the designated project manager and system integrator for the project. The civil works will be awarded through open tender.

The Gangnam District has committed to provide a subsidy of 40% of the project cost and will subscribe for an equity interest of up to 25% in the proposed joint venture company. Samsung Life Insurance has also indicated its interest to subscribe to part of this equity. MMT/KLINFRA will seek to raise the balance of project cost through a combination of equity and external borrowings.

The project is subject to approvals of the relevant Korean and Malaysian Authorities. The final terms and conditions of the joint venture will be formalised between the joint venture partners upon the finalization of the Concession Agreement.

A monorail, a futuristic transportation for short distance travel, will be constructed in Gangnam, Seoul. Gangnam-gu said on September 8 that it had signed a memorandum of understanding with Mtrance of Malaysia, which is the largest transportation company in Southeast Asia. Gangnam-gu plans to construct a monorail along a 6.6 km section from Hangnyeoul Station to Sinsa Station on Subway Line 3, to connect the southern and northern areas in the region.

is this really needed? The subway seems sufficent enough.

It looks ok in the pic, but I found the mono-rail in KL to be fairly ugly. The one in Bangkok isn't very attractive either.

Monorail

Lyle Lanley: Well, sir, there's nothing on earth
Like a genuine,
Bona fide,
Electrified,
Six-car
Monorail!
What'd I say?

Ned Flanders: Monorail!

Lyle Lanley: What's it called?

Patty+Selma: Monorail!

Lyle Lanley: That's right! Monorail!

[crowd chants `Monorail' softly and rhythmically]

Miss Hoover: I hear those things are awfully loud...

Lyle Lanley: It glides as softly as a cloud.

Apu: Is there a chance the track could bend?

Lyle Lanley: Not on your life, my Hindu friend.

Barney: What about us brain-dead slobs?

Lyle Lanley: You'll be given cushy jobs.

Abe: Were you sent here by the devil?

Lyle Lanley: No, good sir, I'm on the level.

Wiggum: The ring came off my pudding can.

Lyle Lanley: Take my pen knife, my good man.

I swear it's Springfield's only choice...
Throw up your hands and raise your voice!

All: Monorail!

Lyle Lanley: What's it called?

All: Monorail!

Lyle Lanley: Once again...

All: Monorail!

Marge: But Main Street's still all cracked and broken...

Bart: Sorry, Mom, the mob has spoken!

All: Monorail!
Monorail!
Monorail!

[big finish]

Monorail!

Homer: Mono... D'oh!

(Just thought I'd get it in there before anyone else does.)

Time to study for the MCAT! (Monorail Conductor Aptitude Test)

Monorails are fun and I like the natural light and view you get. I've ridden monorails in Detroit, Seattle, Vancouver, Osaka, and Disney when I stayed at the Contemporary Resort. But I wonder what the utility is. Will you be able to transfer from a subway station? Will it go anywhere that you can't get to on foot or by a cheap cab ride?

I would've liked to have seen this news story posted in a Real Reality style with thought provoking questions at the end.

"
Do you think the government will let foreigners drive the trains?
When the trains crash, how many millions of people (mostly foreigners no doubt) will die?
Will this ever make any money. or be another nail in the black black financial coffin of Korea?
etc.

Say what! Sufficent enough!?
With the amount of traffic and cars in seoul!!!! Everyone in a hurry to go nowhere in seoul! It takes over an hour for most folks to commute what should be a 20 minute drive because of the gridelock.
The monorail needs to cover the entire city...not just a mere portion of an area.
Sometimes...koreans...and their thinking....puts a smile on my face!

The big problem with getting around Kangnam-Gu is that all the Subway lines run East-West, Not North-South. This problem could have been solved (or at least improved) with a more effective bussing system but the recent revamping of the system doesn't seem to have addressed the problem.

If you are trying to get from a southern part of Kangnam (say Daechi) to a more Northern area (say Cheongdam or Shinsa) then you have to go way out of your way ont he subway. The other alternative is taking a taxi but the traffic throughout Kangnam during the busier parts of the day can make a 1 or 2 Km ride more than a 30 minute trip.

I wondered how long it would take before they added some kind of North-South line to the subway. Looks like they're opting for a Monorail instead. It sounds like a good idea. I hope they do a good job of it.

Actually, they are in the process of continuing the Bundang Line northward from Seollung Station.

Kangnam needs a monorail as much as korea needs a bullet train.

It does need better North-South transport though. Try getting from Kangnam-gu office to Yangjae, its pain as you have to out to express bus terminal and transfer

Actually, Korea already has a bullet train. The KTX was modelled after the TGV in France. I rode it to Daegu last weekend.

Yep, and I think one of the stops is going to be right outside the Kyobo Bookstore in Gangnam which should help alleviate some of the commuter traffic through the main 'Gangnam' station.

It also needs a line to run across the top of Seoul. Try getting from Nowon to the north western reaches of line 3... you have to ride a v-pattern.

thats one that puzzeled me, why not a northern parallell to the 7 line cut across northern Seoul, turn south on the west side and end on the SW side across the river?

makes good sense to me
