What a surprise. Rolling Eyes

i bet all the parents of the children protest their innocence and all the others demand a retest as it wasn't fair.

The Korean education system is shocking the way they focus all their energy on one test.

Well for the parents of the kids who cheated their is millions upon millions of won down the drain. And for the kids...no chance at a future now, forever they will be blackmarked.

The cheating in the state-run test was well organized, with 100 students collecting a reported 20 million won mainly to buy cellular phones and for days of training in how to use them during the exam, police reported as they continued investigations. They attached one of their two cellular phones to an arm, wearing a jacket to conceal it. It was not clear where they hid the second phone. All mobile phones were supposed to have been submitted to the authorities before the exam, but officials did not enforce this strictly, many exam takers recalled.

The police are also investigating whether some of their parents connived the plan and gave them money to purchase the phones....Education authorities are coming under fire for letting the cheating happen.

Are you angry/upset/amused that students here, like everywhere else in the world cheat, attempt to cheat or contemplate cheating and that some get caught.

or

Are you angry/upset/amused that the numbers are growing as they are everywhere else in the world.

or

Are you angry/upset/amused about the usage of high tech devices in the world.

or

Are you angry/upset/amused that you never cheated, never contemplated cheating or otherwise were, yourself caught for cheating?

Now. If a very bad student, one who never studied and was not all that bright to begin with, etc. were to receive a very high score because, as I saw in the paper the other day, his mother, in one hour or less, was able to bow down to a statue of a conctete elephant 1000 times while having a picture of her kid at her feet, would that be cheating?

According to a recent survey, as many as 90 percent of Korea's youth think they live in a country that's corrupt, and a considerable number of them say they're ready to join the club if the occasions calls for it later in life.

Korean students attending an American high school based in Jakarta, Indonesia, bribed security guards at the school and stole final exams, according to the Korean Embassy in Indonesia. The 26 Korean nationals, who were 10th graders at Jakarta International School, photocopied the exam papers and then figured out the answers with the help of private academy instructors, the embassy said. According to the embassy, they received almost perfect scores on the exam.

Police say a cheating ring also aided English testees
When the cheating system was developed in 2000, according to police, answers were written on slips of paper and passed to the examinees by someone also in the testing center. More sophisticated measures came later; small two-way radios were used to relay answers.

Universities Fighting Back at Cheaters
The reputation of university campuses has been stained, with many students being found cheating on their examinations. "It is a serious problem that students, who are usually so self-righteous, achieve their goals by cheating and yet feel no guilt," says Jin Kyo-hun, professor of ethics at Seoul National University.

Professors Cheat to Maintain SCI Scores
A professor of engineering said it was common for there to be up to ten co-authors on a paper, most of whom have had nothing to do with it....a professor Kang at "D" University aged more than 50, concluded a secret agreement with a newly appointed professor to have his name added to papers in exchange for hiring him as opposed to other candidates. Last year, Professor Han at "E" University who had failed to be promoted managed to do so after his name was appended to his student's paper.

I wonder if cheating on the College Entrance Exam is a criminal offense in Korea? Why would the police be looking into it?

You Only Need to Do One Thing Well
PM Lee Hai-chan (said when he was Education Minister): "If you are good at 'one' thing, you can go to university!"
Cheating students: "That's true! If you are good with cell phones, you can get in."

Hey!

Leave Real Reality alone!! This IS the general discussion forum.

Discuss, or don't.

as far as the discussion goes, I say screw 'em. If they cheat and get caught, they pay the price. They knew that when they started. Hundreds of thousands of students in the west have to do standardized tests, and i'd expect them to pay the price if they get caught. I didn't cheat, and sure as hell my parents wouldn't help me cheat. now, they'll have to be Da Bang girls or Ja Jang Myun delivery boys. Ha-ha.

Actually this well-rehearsed scam made international news.

The Korean Times reports more than 40 students could be involved.

There's even talk of the whole exam being retaken by all Korean high-school students, nation-wide.

Exam Cheating Scam Suggests Corporate Level of Sophistication
The university entrance exam cheating case in Gwangju involving the use of cell phones has revealed itself as "corporate-style cheating" in which roles were highly systematized. Gwangju Dongbu Police Station, which is investigating the case, said Monday, "The roles in this crime were divided into four levels -- those who organized the crime, students who provided answers, those who paid money to receive answers, and middle men outside the school who assisted in the operation." Police said 141 people have been implicated in the case so far, and of these, six high school students who led the operation have been arrested. This is the first case in which high school students have been arrested in connection with cheating on the university entrance exam.

Under current regulations, the scores of those found cheating in the test are annulled but they are allowed to take the exam again the following year.
