i'm an insomniac, and the slightest thing can set me off.

it's now 6:46 am and this dog has been howling since about 4.

every time i do so much as poke my head out the window to ascertain its location, it stops. i even walked out onto the street to find it and it shut up.

i get back in bed and try to sleep, it starts again. makes a man feel like david berkowitz.

anyways, i get back in my building and i see i have mail. my phone bill has been opened! why would someone open my phone bill?

and now my internet is only working halfway. everything i try to bring up except dave's and other korean sites is inaccessible, as if the government has blocked hotmail or something. it's screwball.

yeah. i'm griping and i need someone to punch. any volunteers?

it's now 10 minutes to 11am and the dog is still howling.

i took a little trip outside to locate it again and it appears to be locked up on the porch of this house on the end of my block. most likely it's on a leash less than a meter long and missing its people, who have it as a purebred ornament rather than a pet.

can someone who speaks/writes fluent korean please give me the hangeul for

"your dog has been howling since 4am, i got 2 hours of sleep last night. if this happens again i'm going to murder you and everyone you know, then give your lovely animal the home it deserves"

please? i want to write them a little letter.

I had a similar experience one night. There was a dog locked outside on the balcony of the apartment adjacent to mine. The barking started at around 7pm and continued all night. At 4 am I snapped.

I grabbed 6 cans of tuna from my cupboard and started rifling them at the balcony. I'm a big dog lover so I made sure not to hit him but instead rattle the aluminum surrounding the door to wake up the owner. I was unloading heaters on this metal siding and man it was loud..sounded almost like gunshots.

It took all 6 cans of tuna before the owner finally came outside all groggy. I yelled at him as loud as i could.."Geh....Police" followed by "Geh" (pointing at the dog) and a very dramatic throat cutting gesture.

I've slept like a baby ever since.

"Order your dog to be quiet at night, or I'll call the cops."

That should word. Or throw tuna cans at their door. Hahaha! Awesome..

i saw this thread yesterday, but didn't have time to reply.
I have the same problem, but it is a little more complicated.
2 days ago I noticed the dogs and new kennels, beautiful dogs, white jindo. Gave them a pat, scratch, bit of rough and tumble.
They have barked constantly for 2 nights. I almost lost it at 5 am. I too went to try and comfort them, but to no avail.
Heres the sinch. The dogs belong to my Hogwan manager. I am going to go straight in and talk about it today. He is 2 floors above me so probably doesn't hear them, and I sleep outside on a conservatory.
I am just going to say I haven't slept and I am feeling useless as ateacher. I am aslo going to demand updates as to what they will do. If they do nothing, I will ask for a new house. If they say no I am screwed. too close to severence for walking out. And yes it really is a big problem as Sparx and ubercheise will attest too.
I am thinking of feeding them a few sleepin pills tonite to see how that goes. I'm pretty desperate after 2 days of howling.

Some people say, or think, that they 'can't sleep with earplugs'. 3M company makes orange foam ones with an orange plastic case for 1200 won. Or, if you're in a big city, go to a 'safety shop' where they sell stuff for construction; goggles, steel toed boots, etc. If you can still hear the dog get some jackhammer/shooter's 'sound-muffs/earmuffs'. Same safety shop. Plug your ears, wear the 'sound-muffs', and sleep.

i hear they also sell them in "student book stores" which, (if i remember correctly) in korean is one character off of being "fart-gate". (something)mun. i don't remember but it was funny to think of buying earplugs at the fartgate.

You know what you need...

A grenade.

Failing that you can make a nice molotov cocktail with stuff around the house.
