While you may not have a Ph.D. degree, does your university job in the first year even come close to this recently posted job?
Requirement:
Ph.D. in Business administartion or Economics,
6 hrs class teaching/week (business English or related subject)
Payment:
won 5.2 million( approximate $47,000/year $1 =1100 won)
Housing / assitant provided.
Health insurance will be provided.
In your first year, do (or did) you teach at least twice as much for almost half the salary? (or at least 12 hours for 2.6 million won/month) |

Of course not. I also didn't pay a huge bribe to get my position and I don't have publish things and I don't have to hang around during my vacation. |

I don't know...I question the judgement of those who have REAL Ph.D's and Master's...and wanting to teach for around 24K US dollars a year in korea. Even 30K.
If you are a great teacher holding a Ph.D. or a Masters...the better universities in the world would be recruiting you. No vice versa.
Some say...I want to study the culture...yeah..right!
To each his own though.
It's so difficult for anyone to work in korea. The majority have a hard time...only a few, very few seem to enjoy korea.
Most korean universities do not treat the FT's fair either. They are not paid the same as korean teacher's, etc... No tenure, etc..
So...is korea a good choice for university teachers....compared to Europe, Australia, Canada, the US, Japan, or elsewhere. |

Hhahahahahahahaha!
I'll quote the head of my former English Dept:
"I know more unhappy dogs with Ph.D.s teaching as sessionals than I can count. The only ones unhappier are the good teachers with M.A.s who can't even get a sniff at those jobs because they're 'underqualified'."
I have an M.A. I have 20 years teaching experience, at every level from nursery school to university. I have taught 10 subjects. I have 1500 hours of experience with people with special needs. I speak 5-and-a-half languages, 3 so fluently I'm consistently mistaken for a native speaker. I have (locally) published several narrative poems/short works of fiction, been editor-in-chief at a commercial magazine, and text-edited a scholarly journal's annual--twice. I've chaired 2 sessions at national academic conferences. I sell myself well: I've never had an interview (for a teaching post) that didn't result in a job offer.
So where are these mysterious recruiters and why can't I feel them sniffing up my butt?
Unless you're willing to work in the USA, the university level positions just aren't there. Not until the baby boomers retire en masse (in the next 3-10 years) AND the universities decide to fill all those vacnacies (in Canada and the Uk, this has not happened consistently since widespread downsizing began in the late 80s). And even then, unless you've a Ph.D. and a ream of publications, your CV isn't making it to the top of anyone's pile.
As for University recruiters, isn't that a job people did sometime around 1975?
(p.s.: lest this sound personal & embittered: I'm not. I love living and teaching here--great hours, lots of beautiful women, nil cost of living, stimulating environment--sweet.) |

If you teach twice as many hours in the same department, then why do you not receive at least 5.2 million won/month? How can you work next to someone in the same university department doing twice as much teaching and receive half (or nearly half) the salary of someone just hired? |

Because I didn't spend several years of my life scraping by while getting a PHd, I'm not published, and, again, I didn't pay out a huge bribe to get the job. |

Because you didn't spend several years of your life scraping by while getting a Ph.D., you are not published; you should donate your time freely and accept housing as your total pay package. Well, you can receive minimum wage because that is the law. If you expect to take care of a family, forget about it. If you want to receive the same salary and promotions as your Korean colleague with similar qualifications, you can forget that, too. You do not deserve any money to pay for your food, travel, and other things because you do not have a Ph.D. In fact, because you do not have a Ph.D., you should pay the administration for allowing you to teach at such a great institution of higher learning. Because you do not have a Ph.D., you should pay the Korean government for allowing you into the country to teach at a university. |

Love it or leave it but you're never going to change it. Why give yourself an ulcer stressing about it? |

Lots of my colleagues are taking care of families, buying (and eating) food, travelling all over creation.
And, how do you figure I'm paying the Korean government? |

the_beaver,
You should pay the Korean government if you do not have a Ph.D.
Are you some kind of charity?
Stop taking what you do not deserve. Start paying the Korean government for allowing you to teach.

the_beaver,
What about your logic?
Without a Ph.D., you are lucky to teach in a university. Accept what you can get, right? Or carry it just a little bit further.
You do not deserve to teach in a university without a Ph.D. You should be lucky to teach in a university (like some teaching internship without pay). You should pay for the Korean Ph.D.'s that have to do all the administration work for you. Intern pay your internship fee soon.
