art?
shock?
so many of the current crop of british artists, tracey emin in particular, exemplify the idea of 'shock' as a method of engaging (or repulsing) their audience. but after seeing emins' love tent up close, some semi-naked artie type rubbing up against a few geezers in a club doesn't really match up in the 'shock' stakes...
| Quote: |
"The Emperor is naked," the boy said.
"Fool!" his father reprimanded, running after him. "Don't talk nonsense!" He grabbed his child and took him away. But the boy's remark, which had been heard by the bystanders, was repeated over and over again until everyone cried:
"The boy is right! The Emperor is naked! It's true!"
The Emperor realized that the people were right but could not admit to that. He though it better to continue the procession under the illusion that anyone who couldn't see his clothes was either stupid or incompetent. And he stood stiffly on his carriage, while behind him a page held his imaginary mantle. |
good job on the tv segment though! |

Yeah, she seems like the ultimate in vapid emptiness, the triumph of style over substance, a person whose art is so lacking in any fundamental appeal that she has to put more effort into promoting it than actually making it ... she herself is more important than the art ...

Yeah..It looks no different to many Korean girls "minihompi's" that they throw at you. "All about me"...blah blah, aren't i special".
Koreans think they're so ingenious, but westerners have seen it all before, perfected it, and moved on, decades ago.
Well done though Derek..your face matches your posts somehow.. |

Yeah, good. I don't want to just come across as a hater, but what does she do? She's gets money off gullible people for something that is not that amazing. The value of her "works" has been inflated simply by the fact that she's prepared to get her kit off in a club. I don't know exactly how to put it, but it just rubs me the wrong way. It just strikes me as so cheap, and symptomatic of the decay prevalent in modern art, always struggling "reinvent" it's self, be on the "cutting edge", and so on. But what is the art really saying? Think of the astounding art that's been made throughout the ages, does the current crop really match up?
Making a peice of art is an opportunity to say something, something big, something eternal, make a statement that will echo down the ages, make the world if not a "better place" then at least a nicer more enlightening place to be in. I always think of art in terms of, "What will people think of this in 50 years time?" Does is connect with the eternal essense of what it means to be human? Or is it just some tawdry fly by night scam to raise a profile and a few shabby dollars? |

Hey Derrick.
Just wanted to congratulate you on the vid piece. Despite your self-assessment, I thought the production values were very high. If I can ask, what sort of equipment did you use, and how much time did the piece take to cut and edit? |

Definately understand your comments about her.
But the interesting thing is that it gets people to look at her art where perhaps many would have never found reason to view it before. Though we might scoff, we view it and give it an opinion.
She is definately thinking, "out-of-the-box" when it comes to promoting her art. Not saying that how she does it is right or wrong, but I'd bet most people would call it lame, wrong, or otherwise. |

Yes, now more than ever. The almost infinate potential of hi-tech modern multi-media facilities allows everyone to enjoy art, and to participate in it, whereas before it has only been for the elite in society. Art is so much more accessible now, to everyone, and that is what drives such amazing creativity, IMO, in such realms as fashion design, photography, sculpture, architecture, interiors, web design.... I love living in the 21st century, despite everything.
The current climate of uncertainty and fear also I think drives it further, the apprehension of the future, perhaps inspires people to wish to express their fears through the multitudes of channels available to them.
I don't of course, include Nancy's work with this. Her work is interesting in a throwaway sense, but a bit passe to be honest, when you compare it with other stuff around. |

Equipment:
One of the cheapest MiniDV cams out there: Panasonic PV-D51D. It is 3 years old, but you can buy the same one. I use the Firewire output. It's a durable and inexpensive DV Cam. Far from broadcast quality, but gets the job done at computer playback sizes of 320x240 or less. I think they go for 600,000 won in Korea. The model number is probably different, as Panasonic seems to do this in the states as a favor to stores to help hinder price comparisons. No mic jack, which really sucks. the Stereo built-in mic is very good, but not for interviews of course.
Editing Pics: Adobe Photoshop and / or a free program called IRFanview I use if I batch compress photos. I created the logo and graphics by fumbling around for several hours. I was more or less playing at the time. They are now complete, so I won't have to fumble making them on future vids.
Editing Video: Adobe Premiere LE (with a few added options I snatched from a trial of the full version and managed to get to work in my effects folder). I can't remember if LE came with Chroma Keying originally or not. I've got a green background behind me and I key in the fake background I parlayed into a news set. Modifying that set from other photos is what took so long. But now it's done and made into an .AVI, I just use it as a background for my keys. I probably had 12 hours into making that thing -- putting in moving video, etc, and crashing my computer 5,000,000 times as I tried to squeeze out 10 layers of video from Premiere, which can do it, but seems to have lots of crashing issues. I actually made that background in a full trial I had of the new Premiere, but I could have done it in LE at the time, too.
The video took me a few hours to shoot at the club (watching and shooting once and a while). Editing her part of the video took maybe 2 hours as I fiddled and experimented with different things. I screwed around with lots of different compression rates for the web stream, which I am learning more and more about all of the time.
Editing audio: Nero Wave Editor and Goldwave (free trial that runs out after maybe 200 commands, but restart it and it starts back at 0) .
Video Compression: Microsoft's free Media Encoder. I output the files from Premiere as .regular AVI's (not Microsoft DV AVI's) and compress them to .WMV using Encoder. I have found that lowering frame rates to 15 or so per second will improve quality of the video because it spreads the bandwidth out over fewer frames. I have been experimenting with sizes of less than 320x240 playback at maybe 150 to 250 kbps. The smaller the kbps, the smaller the final file is. That one you saw is around 3.2 meg in total. You have to keep all of these sizes in mind if you're hosting a site and paying for bandwidth, etc.
Microphone: Audio Technica AT818 II (18,000 won, but sounds really great with voice up close). I can't plug a mic into my cheapee camera, so I dual-recorded on my computer with this when I made my segment. I have a Maya Audiotrax that I plug it into so I get enough boost for this mic. I've used mics at my old TV station, and this one is just fabulous for VOs-- smashes others that cost much more. Can't tell that on here though, because I'm recording from a distance and compressing the audio to conserve bandwidth.
I'd be making more videos this week, but I am engrossed in five student video projects which will keep me quite busy for a few weeks. I will post links to those when they are done in a few weeks. Sure is hard to gather the high school girls together between classes and after classes to shoot the video. There is a really funny/crazy girl who will be the "anchor" for the school newscast. The students wrote these stories, and I corrected them somewhat. So far, there is a story about a Flasher near the school, a story about a black bug that invaded the school during the fall, a story about restaurants in Bundang, and a cheezy fake undercover love sting we're doing about 2 teachers at the school. The production quality of these will be lacking, but it's all in good fun. |
