Interesting you say that because in the article this is quoted
| Quote: |
| In contrast, taxi companies in Taegu and Taejon have left a fare increase out of consideration, fearing a decrease in passengers amid the ongoing economic slump |
Maybe they just secretely did it |

Honestly,
I think they should rise a little. It must be one of the most hellish work conditions in the country.
Taxis here are so frigging cheap, especially when you compare Per capita income to fares.
Just don't them up any higher |
Have you ever thought how much cabbies make in this country compared to educated workers? I don't feel bad for them at all. I would bet they make a cool two million a month. It's not much to us, but for the natives it is a pretty good salary (especially not being educated). |

But what about the conditions they work in. Admitadelly they do aggrevate their own situation but its sure not something I would like to do. |

its acutually not that bad out there on the roads. I have been driving for 4 years everyday I have already done over 100.000 ks ..
and I must say taxi drivers have it sweet.. now the cabbies in bangkok thats a different story..
I mean there are some places in seoul that has congested traffic but so what I mean we pay for the ride and buddy boy just listens to the radio and cruises through traffic..
now.. BUS drivers.. they have far more stress than taxis..
fact is when they raise the bus fare the drivers dont get the increase..
cabbies raise the price every year or two.. if I rememeber correctly.
well with the gas prices on the raise guess they need too.
still they are all on LPG.. Id say at this rate.. the prices of cabs will be almost tokyo prices by the year 2010
lets just hope the teachers salaires increase too.. |

I am sure it is not the best job in the world--full of its own headaches. But, would you rather deal with traffic or some Stalinist company manager who you have to treat like the son of god even though he is a complete fool for the same or less money (remember, a typical taxi driver might not even have the education for this "great" job)?
Compare a taxi driver to say a driver in NYC. Sure a driver in NYC gets double the fair, but the cost of living is much much higer there. A pack of cigs is eight dollars the last I heard. Never mind trying to find affordable housing.
This is one of the things I like to laugh at Koreans about. Koreans think taxi drivers are "low" people because of the job that they have. I think it is the taxi drivers are the ones that are laughing all the way to the bank. |

...And in this post, we see Mr. Chiaa demonstrating how to wave a red flag in front of RR the Bull. Watch closely, children, as RR prepares once again to "layeth the smackdown" with his trusty (if several-years-old, which is all the better for his purpose) URLs telling Mr. Chiaa how Korean highschool dropouts effortlessly out-earn the average expat English teacher.
The Guru seriously doubts if any but independent cab drivers earn as much as two million won/month, and those would be good months...like the ones before the current economic slump. |

I heard they changed the taxi fares from being metered on time to distance to try and sort out the dangerous driving. If that didn't work, I don't see how increasing the fares will either.
[should I be worried if I start using "eh" even though I'm not canadian?] |
I know you're not Canadian, hence my need to comment on it. But if you use an "eh" just right, you shouldn't be worried at all. Proud perhaps, but certainly not worried. |

Ok I did a little bit of math.
Let's say a taxi driver earns 60.000 won a day after paying for the daily rental of the cab. I want to say that the rental is 50.000 per day and includes a tank a gas (I had my wife ask once). I believe the 60.000 to be very low.
60.000 x 24 days just under 1.5 million.
12 hour days, divided by 110.000 won = 9166 won per hour in fares to make this happen.
I am not saying that this is a dream job. I could not imagine busting my ass in university and then driving a cab. Also, there is no climb up the corporate ladder to make more money in the future. A salary man at a large corporation with no specific skills such as computer programming or such starts out at 1.5 million (I know this to be 100% fact). But, he knows that if the company does well and he stays with them, he can expect double that in ten years even with out cost adjustments due to inflation.
I am just saying that taxi drivers do not have it as bad as people think. If you take an uneducated man, would he make more money and be happier as a taxi driver or working for some BS office job that might fold at any time (there is no way he could get a stable job with a large comany)? |

I was in Daegu on Sunday and the taxi rate started at 1500 won.
Not sure if there is an online site for it, but a few months back the Busan Beat did an article on the life of a taxi rider. If anyone has the time or inclination, it would be good to see posted on this thread. |

Idiot taxi and bus drivers won't improve manners or skills as long as passengers don't care. I see everyday....taxi's stopping in the middle of the street to pick up and drop off fares...why don't the idiot passengers tell the drivers to pull over to the crub?!?! Why do passengers flag down a taxi in the middle of the street?!?! Why don't passengers tell bus drivers to slow down? The fault lies with passengers as well. Raising fees....gas and LPG are also going up, so...
Getting drivers...all drivers in korea to show some manners and respect...won't happen. Koreans are thick headed and think they are the king behind the wheel and don't care about anything except getting someone in a hurry. |

I don't think that raising the price is unreasonable, but I worry about this place. The cost of living in Korea is skyrocketing beyond belief. I have been here 1 1/2 years and everything has gotta be about 20% higher. 20% is 1 1/2 years is a shockingly high rate of inflation.
I won't have to spend more on taxis. I will just ride them less often. Most people will probably do that for a while, then start using them again at the normal rate.
I also agree, if taxis drove safer, I'd be willing to pay more. But they won't. You can't drill through 50 million thick skulls overnight. |
