Just watched the first episode of the new Korean drama, Love Story in Harvard.

It'a actually fully set at Harvard so lots of English-speaking scenes.

The love story element will become tiresome no doubt but I do enjoy the little insights this type of thing gives us into Korean attitudes of the West.

Every Monday and Tuesday. 10pm. SBS.

I wonder if it's going to be a complete ripoff of the original Love Story also set in Harvard.

Just how are they portraying those Bostonians anyways? I'll have to see this...I wonder if it's been filmed on location.

Feel sorry for those Harvard types. Wonder if they thought that this romantic image of Harvard will attract the wealthy fee paying students through the registrar? :)

Call me a cynic, but in this day and age, this is the sort of thing that sets off alarm bells in my head.. :)

So, I watched the second episode......for my sins...

It's pretty awful but there are moments to make it worthwhile.

The protagonist (handsome Korean guy) has been in a running feud with his Harvard professor. Despite the terrible English this guy speaks he just won a debate with his professor to garner the respect of his entire class making him the most popular guy in the Law school.

It's not 'Citizen Kane' but it is worth watching. Funny in a cheesy way.

As far as insights gleaned...basically....Koreans see themselves in the western world as trying to prove themselves the equal of westerners.

Need an example? The protagonist was told by a more accepted Korean student not to say he's from Korea until he does better in class.

How about that line by the white lawyer (I guess) to the star's Korean nemesis: "I notice that you Asians always major in either law or medicine"? Stereotyping is alive and well here on the peninsula, and apparently in Boston too.

The English the lead speaks is TERRIBLE. They could have at least chosen an actor that doesn't sound as though he's reading directly from the script.

But I suppose the majority of Korean viewers won't notice, so who cares, right?

How did you like her acting as she was scrubbing down the AIDS patient? She looked way too happy. I don't know any nurse that would be that happy to scrub down anyone while they're sitting on the toilet. I thought it was overly melodramatic.

Does anybody recognize the actor playing the part of the law professor with the attitude?

Well, riddle me this...What do this drama and the batman television series from the 60's have in common?

PS. Too right, the Korean lead has absolutely terrible English. I couldn't understand a single word he said. The female lead is alright though.
