Given that most cultures in the world kiss hug, hold and touch each other like it's no big deal, I'd be willing to bet that the actual messed up culture would be our own.

And I'm still trying to get a mental image of just what exactly the non-gay Korean co-worker in the original post is doing to the girls. Is he dry-humping them?

No, he's not grinding-up against them. But it just looks degrading to me.

Probably a perv, but different rules definitely apply here - sometimes.

Two summers ago, my kid took his trousers off to play on some grass and an old Korean approached him and 'admired' his manhood, even touching it. They old guy was simply praising him for being a boy / me for having a boy. I had heard the stories but only half believed them. I have since observed a couple of female relatives play with 'it' (his manhood) when coming out of the bathroom. Such is quite normal - in Korea. Anywhere else would definitley be perv territory.

Some time back...it was reported and proven...that korean mothers...some....and I also heard it from adult male students...that some of their friends mothers' would "help their sons before a big test/exam by "Relieving" the son of their stress!"
No...not a bogus story...but...how sick!
I am sure that some of the ESL posters on this site might recall the story on this some time back.

My son is only 4.

And by the way, in Japan, about ten years ago there were a series of stories/articles in the press from men who confessed that they had sex when teenagers with their mothers in exchange for being more studious. Never heard of it in Korea, or amywhere else for that matter.

Hellofaniceguy - What story were you referring to - is there a link?

I'm searching for a link or past postings refering to this...if I can locate them...I'll post them.
I did hear it from some adult students however and a few ajumas over the years. I recall a few ajumas giving me the stink eye when I told them they were perverts for molesting their sons. Not to mention child molesters.
An buddy of mine...lived in Japan for 12 years....mentioned the same thing happens in Japan.

Having been through most of SE Asia, in some places where little kids don't even wear pants, I can tell you that this sort of behaviour is not limited to Korea.

I read about this 'handjob in return for good exam results' thing on a circular email called PopB*tch, assumed it was an Urban Myth, otherwise it's the creepiest thing I've ever heard of.

I'm sure it must happen some place. Some mother rationalizes her teenage son is girl crazy, won't study, knows nothing about masterbation (yes, I know how to spell the word... I am an expert... just the stupid swear filter bleeps out correct spelling), and she does what she does to her husband to settle him down. A lil of the ol' rub n tug. But as an unmentioned cultural phenomenon? I doubt it too.

Sounds a bit like a) the peanut butter dog urban legend and b) those stories of the Japanese/Chinese/Korean family that moves into the white neighborhood and suddenly the neighborhood cats and dogs start going missing...

Naked children don't seem to freak out Koreans as much (which is weird because as adults showing adult skin seems to freak them out and makes them highly uncomfy). My boss tends use background images of her 1 year old daughter on her computer and doesn't at all seem to mind her daughter's little vagina displayed for the world. Makes me very uncomfy but I try to understand different cultural ideas.
