I am sure I am not the first one to fall for the cheap DVDs available throughout Asia. I am leaving for Thailand next week and I want to shop for DVDs there. But first I need to get myself a DVD drive for my desktop. Yongsan is obviously the place to get that. But I want to make sure I understand what to look for.
Can you guys fill me in on the following issues (Note: I am NOT looking for a DVD burner. Just a DVD player to build into my desktop.
):
Arrow Do all DVD drives play both DVD+R and DVD-R disks? If not, what should I choose and how does this choice affect the price?
Arrow Do I need to look for regionless DVD drives? Or are the non-regionless drives easily made regionless (I am not a computer wizard)? What would you advice and what does it do for the price?
Arrow Does my Intel Pentium 4 allow me to connect a DVD drive?
Arrow Any brands to avoid? Any recommendations?
Arrow What should I expect to pay?

Thanx guys and girls.....

So, you just want an ODD to play DVDs in your desktop computer? If you absolutely don't want a burner (and why, I have no idea), then get a combo drive. They play DVDs as well as CDs. I guess the Samsung 352b (I and 3 of my friends have them. Good and reliable) is about 60,000 now...maybe a bit more. It burns CDs, but will only play DVDs. As far as being region-free, there are many hacks to make it regian-free, so that's not an issue.

Why don't you pony up a bit more dough and then you can rent DVDs and burn them yourself? Cost of rental plus a DVD will add up to about 3,000...pretty cheap....cheaper than buying it. Besides, many of the DVDs here are just rips anyways. A DVD burner is pretty cheap...maybe 120,000.

Your P4 has nothing to do with it....does your system have 2 ODDs right now? If not, mainboards will house up to 4 IDE connections, which is what an internal combo drive would be. You will have to get inside the computer to connect it, but I guess you knew that.

I used a Samsung 352B last year. It was very nice, had no problems with it at all.
For a DVD burner, I have some contacts.
NuTech DDW-163: 16x DVD writer. Burns DVD-R and DVD+R at 16x, Dual layer at 2.4x, and rewriteable at 4x.
96,000 won plus delivery.
Used to be closer to 115. My, how the prices have dropped!
