|
|
I had a bit of shocking news last week.
I responded to an ad for a university looking for teachers in Jeonju about 2 weeks ago.
I had applied to this same university last year in August, 2003. I had a few telephone conversations with the guy in charge of hiring and 2 telephone interviews. By October of 2003, I was told via an e-mail that the hiring committe had decided to hire me for March. I responded to the e-mail indicating that I had accepted the offer.
However, about 3 or 4 days later, I get another e-mail from this school telling me that they had revoked their offer in favour of a Ph.D holder whom the department was more interested in. I was really bummed out to get the offer and then have it taken away.
Well, I saw an add for the same university 2 weeks ago and sent the same fellow an e-mail asking if I were interested in the position would he re-consider my application.
He replies to my e-mail saying that they were really impressed with my work experience and that they really wanted to hire me but that I had sent him an e-mail telling him that I did not want the position.
I couldn't beleive what I was reading! I had never sent the guy an e-mail telling him that I did not want the position.
Here's the shocker!
I found out this week that the girl I was seeing last year was reading my e-mail and did not want me to take the position because it would involve us breaking up due to my moving to Jeonju.
She opened an e-mail account with an almost exact e-mail address as the gentleman who hired me had and sent me an e-mail telling me that the university had decided to take back the job offer in favour of an applicant who held a Ph.D.
She then sent the university an e-mail using my e-mail account telling the university that I had decided not to come to Jeonju and that I would not be accepting the job offer !!
At the time, I had thought that I had really received an e-mail from the university telling me that they were recanting on the job offer.
I now work in a university elsewhere and am pretty happy with my situation.
I always thought that the whole situation was really weird and am finally glad that the real truth has been unraveled.
However, do you think I should reply to the university explaining what happened?
I feel really bad for the school that wanted to hire me and took the time to interview me several times and then this girl interferred and both sides lost out.
On the other hand, if I am not going to work for this university I wondering if I should just let it go. |

Well, I talked to her and asked her point blank.
She denied it. I didn't beleive her.
I pressed harder and she started crying and told me what she had done.
I didn't know what to do.
I still haven't 'done' anything.
We went and got something to eat after but as time goes on here, I find myself more and more upset by what she did. |

Yeah, I have been busting my ass for the last 2 years trying to land a university position and I finally get one, only to have it taken away from me.
This would've been a really nice job and in a descent city.
If I hadn't of finally landed a university position at a good school I would now be deeply traumatized - LOL!!!!
But, yeah, actually I decided to post something about this because it does bother me somewhat - I actually found out last week, when she told me. |

Tiger,
After I finished my M.A. and CELTA, I landed a faculty position at a Taiwanese university.
It's as good or maybe even better than the school I was invited to teach at last year, as I do not have to teach any compulsory Summer or Winter camps.
Office, Internet, Computer
19 1/2 weeks paid vacation!
10 hours class-time per week, 3 days a week.
1.5 month bonus at end of contract
Here's a photo of my university - it's on top of a mountain overlooking Taipei City:
5 weeks vacation coming up in January / February - Tiger, where you gonna be then? I'm thinking I might hit the Phils or Vietnam. |

That's really low of her. Her mug should be placed on milk cartons with a warning that tells every guy to stay away! |

Any more of those jobs being offered? Would an M.A. in something else combined with a CELTA cert be acceptable?
I would love something like that - an ideal job! |

Yeah, she told me not to contact the university because she realized that she had done something very bad and that she was afraid that they might contact the police - aha, aha!!
She's a nice girl, I guess, but did something really stupid.
Actually, typing this story out on here tonight has made me feel a lot better - but it's gonna be problem with our friendship, for sure. |

Tiger, I'm a 'newbie' at my school but some of these guys have been in the department for 15 years and I'm sure they know people and refer them to the hiring committee.
When you graduate, let me know and I can ask the department assistant. She can tell me what their plans are for hiring.
Honestly, though, your best to come to Taiwan and get in touch with all of the schools you think you'd like to work at in Taipei.
I had 2 offers and picked the one I'm at now.
The deal here in Taiwan is a lot different than in Korea or Japan. In Taiwan, the Ministry of Education controls all hiring of university teachers.
In fact, all university teachers are given a teaching lincense once they are hired by a university. Once you get that teaching license, you are good to go and can work anywhere as a faculty member on the island if a school decides to hire you.
YOu cannot teach in a university without this license and the only way to get it is to have at minimum a Master Degree.
Tiger, what I like about working in Taiwan is that it is a great jumping-off point for travel around Asia! I got the Philippines an hour and half away out of Taipei, Tokyo and Seoul are 3 hours, Hong Kong a little over an hour and Bangkok about 3 1/2 hours.
Good for travelling during those long breaks! |

And I thought most women were dumb about relationships. This girl is flat out nuts, and you need to walk away now, change your phone number, change your e-mail, cut off all contact. She intentionally sabotaged your career! |
