| ...is it because there are many cdns here that wages are driven down? or is it just saying something for the sake of saying something? so what if there are more cdns than brits, americans, ozzies, or kiwis? if there were more americans working esl here would it then be their fault? maybe there is a desire for teachers and it happens that between cdns and americans who are more desired because of their accent that the cdns are the ones that are more willing to leave their country and experience the world ... when I am travelling i tend to meet more cdns, brits, ozzies, kiwis, germans, french, brazillians than i do americans. it is a market that has attracted people from all over the english speaking world. it is not a canadian conspiracy to drive down the price of salaries. you have to look hard and not accept the 1st, 2nd, or 15th job that's been offered. maybe it's people that are trying to make excuses by blamning others rather than thinking things through and seeing theirselves as part of the large group of people over here that want to teach, experience another country, and save some money... |

Such fools are known to exist in Korea to drive wages down, and oftentimes, they go by the name of "Canadian." |
The rest of the time they go by the name of "kyopo" |
Misinformed, aren't we, Urban Myth? Most kyopos can make more money than the non-Korean teacher, particularly if they speak Korean (wow, isn't that thought!).
. |
How does speaking Korean make them that more markable? So can 45 million other Koreans. Most kyopos that I've seen post on this board, complain that it is harder finding work than for white teachers. And I've known a good many kyopos who are working here make less, because they are more interested in "discovering their historicial roots" or something else along those lines. I would seriously doubt that "most" kyopos can make more money simply because they are kyopos, considering that over the more than four years I've been here, the #1 complaint from kyopos is how hard it is to get a job over here.
As for Canadians driving wages down because there are so many, that's just silly. The reason wages are being driven down is that there are so many foreign teachers (regardless of nationality). Canadians are no more willing to take a low salary than the next person. True a greater proportion of the people who are willing to take a low salary may be Canadians, but that's only because there are more Canadians in the overall foreigner population, not because Canadians overall are willing to take a low salary. |

| If the trend continues of being able to buy more U.S dollars for less Korean Won, doesn't this mean schools will be able to attract more American teachers? And consequently, for every American who decides to take up residence here, one Aussie, Kiwi, Brit or Canadian will lose out in the "U.S teacher preferred" job market? |

It's most likely true in the "hagwon" business, but probably those who can speak both languages fluently could land some sweet jobs and I'm not talking about jobs only restricted to esl.
Marsha Park: "Do you see that guy over there?"
Ms. Kim: "Yeah, what about him, he looks so-so."
Marsha Park: "He's a gyopo."
Ms. Kim: "He's sort of cute, now that you mention it."
Marsha Park: "I see him at the healthclub in Apkujeong. I hear he works at a major company here. He also drives a nice sports car. I think he's just dreamy."
Ms. Kim: "Umm...yeah, he's sort of sexy....!" |

I've forgotten what this thread is supposed to be about. Only fools work for 2.0 mil/month? Canadians are the "Mexicans" of Korea? Gyopos can earn sweet salaries, but they can't get a job?

TCM, what is your little dialogue here supposed to be telling us? To me, you're saying Korean women are crass, shameless golddiggers who can't see beyond someone's money or passport? No, seriously -- what's that about?
Okay, I remember the topic... It was about salaries and the tumbling US dollar. During the IMF, expats both in and outside the ESL business in Korea were demanding huge salary increases from their Korean employers to offset the fall of the won against their home-country currencies. They reasoned that even 30-40% pay hikes would effectively constitute a salary freeze, as the won had tumbled so far.
Some tried to get their employers to revise their contracts so they'd be paid in US dollar equivalents. For any who may have been succeeded, I wonder what their strategy is now. |

Switch back to payment in KRW, of course. |

It's about the hours--mostly.
I would say what drives salaries down (if anything that has to do with us)is teachers agreeing to 40-45 classes a week. If 8 classes a day is 2.0 guess what? 4 classes a day for 1.7 looks great.
This ad I saw yesterday. 8-10 mornings noon-1 7-10 evenings. Late nights and early mornings. THAT is the sort of job that should pay a lot --but doesn;t. (it's 1. |

Duh!...and how long have you lived in Korea?
That was besides the point as I was trying to illustrate the disparate salaries of gyopos here. |
