Try walking near the art/music departments Smile

In the back of the Art's Building is where most smoke her, also my students tell me, that this is where the lesbians hangout.

I think a good reason is because it is so cheap here.

Very true.

However, lets just say a pack of cigarettes cost 8000 won instead of 2000 won. I'm sure less people would smoke.

in England it's about 10,000 won for a pack, and lots of people still do it. There has been some evidence to suggest that nicotine might be addictive you know..

Point taken guys.

However, there must be some study that shows correlation between price increases and levels of smoking.

Absolutely. It's the reason cigarette companies fight tax increases tooth and nail. Nothing motivates people to quite like a hit at the pocket book.

I'm not disagreeing with Just Because; I know there's a very clear correlation between price of cigarettes and rates of quitting.

I'm more interested in what it is about Koreans that prompts them to smoke in the first place. I think it's something besides the fact that it is a relatively low-cost addiction to indulge in.

Just another aspect of the Confucian brainwashing that refuses to go away. In the simplistic minds of the older generation, women still don't have the same freedom to kill themselves slowly as do men. Unfortunately, Korean females are still regarded as second-class. They will, however, in the fullness of time, achieve their payback; so many of their gender have been aborted that their male counterparts might have to win a decreasing number of them by becoming charming, considerate and compassionate. Yes, and that will be the same day that pigs take to the air.

andrew, i'd like to see some proof for your point.

i've been harassed many times by korean men for smoking; i usually tell them where they can go when they do it. fortunately i'm taller than most of them when i where my big boots, so i'm a bit intimmidating (sp). i think it's total b.s that men can smoke and women can't.

my last director told me that i wasn't to smoke around the school area as "women don't have as many rights as they do in canada here". i thought was pretty stupid.

I was under the impression that one of the major reasons why so many men smoke, is that cigs are handed out for free (or very cheaply) in the army. And that many men get addicted during their military service.

Anybody in the know about this?

I have heard that as well, but it also seems to me like a lot of pre-military service aged Korean males smoke as well.

I wonder, Korea being the sort of society it is, whether men who don't smoke become "wang-dda"s in their circles. Perhaps peer pressure is a large factor.

It also may be that many Koreans have an "addictive personality" type, which increases susceptibility to excessive smoking, gambling, drinking, etc.
