yes soju is made from formaldehyde, arsenic and puppy dog tails. It's certainly not fermented sweet potatoes or rice. No no no.

Yes. A bottle of Tylenol.

And indeed the title "Mr. No-mates 2004"

Soju is absolute poison. Korean blokes drink too much of it. It makes them sick and causes them to die young.

If i drink 1 botle of soju it kills me.

I'm not sure what it is about soju but it has a shocking effect on me.

Drinking 1 bottle of soju is the equivalent of me drinking 20 beers.

What else would it be made of? Anti-matter? Water, ethanol, etc. It's all chemicals.

Soju is mostly made with sweet potatoes or rice. At 23 or 24% alcohol, I'd guess it goes through a single distillation, which by itself wouldn't be enough remove all impureties produced during fermentation, hence the nasty hangover.

Yep, I've heard this also. It was originally made from potatoes (or sweet potatoes?) but the crap they sell these days is something purely synthetic.

I just had like four or five bottles of beer for the first time in a long while, and it seems I can't take alcohol well anymore. That's good since I blew so much dough on booze and I've gotten healthier and in a better mood since I greatly reduced drinking.

I'll guess many posters here are under 30, so well, enjoy it while you can.

I've also lost a lot of weight thanks to going off alcohol. I used to think I couldn't have a good time without booze but geez, sometimes you really outdo yourself.

Soju is absolute poison. The problem is in the way that they drink it. Little shots done too quickly. It's like that one shot of beer a minute over 100 minutes. It does your head in even though you really haven't drunk a lot of it...

I've had a couple of times on the soju that I've gone black. That scares me- And I was a pretty big drinker... In my day I suppose. That's enough course for me to say that I'm not interested in the side effects.

I've blacked out twice on soju, once on tequila, used to think it couldn't happen but it's pretty scary. Soju or cheap nasty Korean beer are a recipe for killer hangovers. It's like drinking paint-thinner.

I've tossed cookies once in Korea: after drinking apple and lemon soju on my second night in town. Sort of like getting run over by a bus. Never saw it coming.

An accurate 'distillation' of that product. The 'premium' stuff is further enhanced with a touch of gunpowder. I quit the soju years ago. My body kept saying, " Don't put any more of that in me". Now, if I require a booze hit more interesting than the thin beer sold here, I'll order a seriously overpriced Margarita (if I'm out), or pick up a couple of bottles of the Jinro plum wine to take home. It's not exactly a top-shelf item either, but the fruit base creates the illusion that I'm getting some nutritional value (Vitamin C?) from the stuff. Also, it's much easier to shake off come the cold and indifferent light of dawn.

Unless it's fortified with alcohol, it must be distilled to have 24% of alcohol. Yeast dies when the alcohol content reaches 14-18%. Synthetic ethanol is never used for human consumption because the fermentation produces toxic by-products.

Quote:
Lee Jeong-gyun, a professor of medicine at Seoul National University, led a research team that studied the problem and concluded that Korea has the highest percentage of adult alcoholics in the world. The team calculated that just over one in five Korean adults are alcoholic, and said that is a warning about the perils of Korean drinking customs. A survey by the Ministry of Health and Welfare last February said 16 percent of Koreans are alcoholics, and that the number of women with the problem has risen dramatically since a 1984 survey on the subject.

The two surveys concluded that the rate of alcoholism in males dropped from 42 percent to 26 percent but the number of afflicted females rose from just over 2 percent to almost 7 percent. Both surveys were conducted using the criteria suggested by the American Mental Health Association; it uses a checklist of 11 effects, including the consumption of alcohol with the intent of reaching a state of intoxication and a failure to stop drinking after attempting to go on the wagon. Doctors say many patients are not aware of the seriousness of alcoholism. "It takes an average of six years for alcoholics to recognize their illness and ask for professional treatment," said Yun Myeong-sook, a professor of social welfare at Jeonbuk University. Many patients, she said, ask for counseling only after being fired from a job, having an auto accident while driving drunk or undergoing a breakup of one's family. Medically speaking, alcohol is less harmful than nicotine. According to health science researchers at Harvard University, the probability of dying from nicotine-related illnesses is about four times greater than that of death from alcohol-related illnesses. But the physical suffering and mental aftereffects of alcohol abuse, the researchers said, is three times greater than that from smoking.

"The success rate in treating alcoholism increased for patients with families who were resolute from the very beginning," said Mr. Min. "When necessary, those families called for help from the police and even threatened divorce."

There has been a steady growth of alcoholism in Korea, and medical treatment should not be delayed in most cases. Perhaps the tradition of alcohol-fueled socializing has caused more and more people to suffer.
