At the start of next year I'll be moving to work in Suwon - it looks likely I'll be living in the SE of the city near the Galleria / Tesco, though there's a small possibility I'll have to commute from Seoul.
Does anyone have experience of commuting that kind of distance in Korea?
Are there good places to go out and meet people (whether foreign or Korean) in Suwon, or will it be better to head to Seoul? What's the best way to go into Seoul from Suwon in the evening?

Hello |
is an easy commute but it really depends where you live in seoul, and how much you want to spend, take the train from either seoul, yongsan or yongdongpo and your at suwon station in about 30 mins, then 15 mins on a bus to galleria, but this is going to hurt about 6000 won each way,
but price, there is a bunch of busses from seoul, gangnam and sadang, but you get stuck in traffic and stuff, so will take you a bit time sometimes, and there is no bus from seoul that takes you there quickly directly, they all go to yongtong or suwon station, both of which are about 15 - 25 mins from galleria,
words of advice, dont do it, just get a place in suwon, if you want to live near seoul still but also near suwon find a place near suwon station or yongtong, and then commute to seoul if you wanna, everyday for a year, this woudl suck, i did it for a few months before me and my wife got engaged and it sucked !!! |

I'll be working at the Samsung complex. Shouldn't be much further on teh bus, though.. I think they may lay on buses as well, from somewhere in Seoul. Not sure what the roads are like, though (or if I'd prefer to pay for the train).

That's what I'm worried about. I know what the traffic's like in Suwon and central Seoul. It sounds pretty unreliable.

The problem is I might only be in Suwon until March, and then return there in July until September. My company won't want to keep somewhere for me all the way through, and there doesn't seem to be any serviced accommodation in Suwon - so if we can't get a short let on a normal apartment in Suwon, they'll put me up in Seoul. So it's not my decision
How's getting into Seoul from Suwon in the evening - and how late can you stay out? |

I live in North Suwon and travel to Seoul everyday using the bus and then subway. The 7770 bus.....i think it leaves suwon station goes directly to sadang station. It costs 1600 won (1500 if you use a transportation card). That might be too long for you....I am nearby the Homeplus(North Suwon)...it take me about 30 minutes to get to Sadang...if the traffic is heavy, usually on Monday mornings......sometimes it takes about 45 minutes. If you are leaving from Suwon Station, maybe it would take about another 30 minutes...? Its a makes for a long day commuting back and forth....I leave at around 7...and get home around 7.
Okay I just saw your other post.. ....to get from my end of Suwon to Seoulleung station(right before Samsung) takes about 1 hour....I'm not sure if that helps... |

Thank you, it helps a lot! Certainly sounds like very long days. I'm very unlikely to be leaving work before 7pm, so that'd be quite nasty.
Fingers crossed about living in Suwon, then. |

i currently live close to Galleria and there are a lot of new officetels in the area that offer short-term accomodation; at least I think they do. i know for sure mine does and i assume the other six or seven officetels in the region offer the same. i think you could get away with 400,000 and no key money for a short-time stay. but, if you want to stay for more than a year you have to put down key money, like 3 million and the rents about the same. at least i think that's how it works; i remembered it didn't make much sense to me at the time. the buildings are new and there are a lot of ju-jums and bars in the area, so i think that's the reason for them; i also thinks that's why they offer short-term. also, the Samsung complex is like a 10 min bike ride from here or less by bus or taxi. hopes this helps. |

That's good to hear. Thanks for your post - that's really valuable info! I think we're looking at the "My Home" Daewoo place. I'm not overwhelmed about living so close to a Burger King and KFC, though. I'd rather spend 10k on a good bbq and beer..
Apparently the key money is some quirk of Korean law? Compared to the rent, it's damn high.
Is riding a bike safe round there?! |

For the record, I hate Suwon with a passion. Suwon station is a nightmare to get a taxi from, and busses are not much better. It's also a long way from the station to a lot of places one might be heading to. I lived there for a year and couldn't wait to get out, there's something grey and dead about it ... |
