hey everyone...
the apkujeong cobras are hitting the fine city of gyeongju, 11-strong this saturday (yeah, we're missing the dave's gathering, but it couldn't be helped).
anyways
i need help in finding overnight accomodation for 11 fruitcakes. there are four people who are coupled off, so maybe they want something a little more romantic, but the rest of us are pretty punk rock and would be fine with a yagwon (i hear they're more than sufficient if you just want to snooze and shower).
can anyone help me? |

kyungju ... mostly temples and such if i remember correctly. trees. nature. there is a little downtown area. just wander down the main drag -- you must know the sign for yogwan by now. like a bowl with steam coming out of it. don't pay more than 35,000 won. they have some kick ass hot springs there too -- can't remember the names/ locations -- better to ask a local. |

isn't the sign with steam coming out of it "jim jil bang"? and doesn't that mean i'll be sleeping in a room with 30 snoring koreans? or will a yagwon give me a private room? |

I stayed in an ok yogwan right next to the bus station for W30,000 in August. It was above a restaurant down a side street. Seriously, walk out the back door of the bus stop and there it is. There are quite a few more. I think there's a backpacker's place in that area, too, but it seemed like a bit of a relic from the 70's. It's a beautiful place, you'll have fun. As for late night fun, I was there with family so didn't do much. There is a bit of a red-light area across from the train station (Shocker.) I didn't go in. Seriously. |

Not necessarily. That sign can mean sauna, jjim jil bang, women's only sauna, yogwan, minbak, yoinsuk or mokyotang. I always thought it looked like a cup of coffee, personally. Can't you read the signs?
Yogwans give private rooms for W30,000. It's in the Korean Constitution of 1948, I believe. |

true, that symbol can mean sauna or yogwan. you can always tell the yogwans because of the plastic strips hanging down that veils the doorway/parking area for privacy. if you can read hangeul, the sign will say motel or yogwan. saunas are generally located in the basement of office buildings but not always. i've stayed in a lot of yogwans. i like them -- they are cheap and usually clean and comfortable. |

yeah, i can read it... i just assumed. i didn't know there was more than one place whose logo implies getting hot and steamy with a bunch of other dudes.
i thought there was just the one hot and steamy place that i'd been avoiding since my buddy caught a guy taking photos of his garbage with a camera phone while he was dozing. |
