|
|
I know there is a wealth of information on this site... in fact TOO MUCH. I would like some personal feedback from people who have completed a TEFL certificate (or TESL) in the Seoul area and had good luck finding a job with the qualification.
I am very open to online learning too, as long as it's something recognized by Kyonggi government (have to check out what you suggest, I suppose).
I have been advised that whatever I take, it should provide at least 100 hours.
My employer is saying that Kyonngi wants me to get, or make plans to begin working on, a certificate for TEFL or TESL to teach next year.
Thanks. |

I know there's a TEFL International somewhere in Seoul. Was thinking about doing my certificate there, but they cancelled classes last summer (due to lack of students) when I was looking. I believe they started it back up again though. Seemed decent for the price. You can check them out at http://www.teflinternational.com (ooh big surprise!) |

I'm looking at an online certificate, if that's good enough. I would rather do the "real thing," so I get some practitcal advice from a better teacher directly, but seeing how it isn't going to help me much in my other occupation (getting back into TV when I go home) I almost hate to spend a lot of money on it.
Just have to see if they will accept an online degree.
It worries me that for now they might, but later not.
Am looking at www.teflonline.net because it claims to offer 100 hours and they say it says so on the certificate. |

Well, now I'm bummed.
I asked the company of the online course I wanted to take if they could provide me with a sample copy of a certificate ( www.teflonline.net ). They did, and it is a very plain Microsoft Word created certificate document that doesn't even have a seal. How dumb!
If I gave that to my boss, I think he would laugh! |

I've been looking into getting a certificate and been asking around too. From what I've gathered, there are many places you can get the certificate (online, intensive two-week courses, etc). Many places that offer certificates are basically businesses looking for a quick way to make money. Here are some tips to help you get a legit certificate.
1.At least 100 hours
2.University affilated/based
3.No online courses
4.And make sure the certificate is NOT a piece a paper easily duplicated or made by a microsoft software.
Hope that helps. |

If you check the TEFL International site, they have a distance certificate called PELT that is designed to be completed while you are working (in terms of how they distribute the lesson load). |

...also too, you can start the PELT course any time, you aren't limited by a set schedule. And if you are really interested in starting right away and don't mind travelling, the TEFL International Certificate, classes start every month in China and Thailand. |

Hey, I just posted this in another thread, but here's one if you'd like to actually attend classes here in Seoul, rather than do it on-line... It takes five months though, so you might need to save up some cash.
It's affiliated with the University of Maryland too, so that may lend it some credibility. Most schools here see an American university mentioned on a credential in any way/shape/form, and they're all over it like white on rice.

Ah yeah, it's at Sookmyung, too... It's a women's university, but this course doesn't discriminate. Might be a decent five months! |

Also if you complete the Sookmyung course, it counts as 12 credits towards a distance MA-TESOL with the University of New England, in Australia. |

Interesting... how many credits needed total for the MA-TESOL in Aussie? |

This was about a year ago when I looked (a friend of mine in Daegu is doing the distance MA), but as I recall the Sookmyung certificate is good for 1/3 of the total credits you need to do the distance MA-TESOL. Now that I think of it, I can't remember if the MA program is University of New England, or another Australian distance MA-TESOL.
Will try to find the link on this...more to come. |
