I want to come to Korea in March 2005 and what to know what my options are. My qualifications are a degree and masters degree in business, a TESOL certificate and I will finish my CELTA in late February, and 2 years teaching in a college in Thailand. I only want to teach students 16+.so NO KIDS!!
I am not too fussed about location, but would prefer seoul. So far I have found nothing!! NOTHING! I have only found a few jobs on DAVES ESL CAF and tefl.com and eslteachersabroad.com. I thought I could find a job quite easily..guess not! Could anyone answer my questions..
1) How can I find a job? No jokes about being lazy..my eyes are sore from 2 months of searching the web!!!
2) Where are some websites for jobs in colleges/high schools?
3) Am I qualified for colleges?
4) With my qualifications, whats the best job/salary/location I can hope for?
Any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks.James |

What exactly are you doing? How are you conducting your job search? The best thing to do is to find ads (like here on Dave's) and apply directly to the school by sending them the things that they ask you for in the ad. Apply to more than one place. However, for hakwon jobs, it might be a bit early to be looking at ads if you can't come until March.
However, I think you are qualified enough to apply for university jobs. You have a Masters and a couple teaching experience, as well as university teaching experience. And your arrival time is perfect because the university school year begins at the beginning of March. However, the big disadvantage you have is that you are applying from overseas. A lot of universities want to interview their applicants. However, there are uni jobs you can get from overseas. You should start applying for them right now. Many deadlines have passed, and others are coming up soon. |

englishspectrum.com is an all free sevice for jobs offered and wanted. This means many employers are using it.
Dave's charge employers nowadays.
I had a lot more activity after posting my resume on englishspectrum than after posting it on Dave's. |

I found my (hogwan) job by posting on eslteachersboard.com...might be worth checking out as it is also free to employers I believe. |

I'll give you some good advice.
Come over and look for yourself.
You'll find the job you want a lot more easier if you are here. |

Masters Degree? CELTA? Experience teaching adults in Taiwan? There is obviously no place for you in Korea. You might as well stay home.
Those qualifications obviously aren't good enough.

I agree. TONS of jobs throughout Korea. But its a 1000 times easier when you are actually in the country. I only signed 1 contract from abroad - my first contract.
Everything else I go to Korea, look around at the place.. look at what I am getting into.. plus you can interview immediately on the spot.. and more than likely you will have a multitude of good offers to choose from. |

Perhaps you should hide your light under a bushel so to speak and not declare your MA on your application. You also might want to consider the benefits that working a couple of years in the country in a run of the mill job can give you in terms of hands on experience and, perhaps more importantly, humility. THere's also the opportunity of being on the ground so you can work hard on finding a more suitable job.
It does seem strange when you can pick up a job without breathing here that you report you have nothing. Perhaps you really mean "well I've had offers and seen opportunities but they really aren't what I want"
I dont' know, maybe it's time to lower your standard a bit... |

I helped the boss look for people to work the haggie. If they weren't in Korea she wasn't interested. Probably not every school is like this. Wanted to save paying the airfare over. And wanted to meet the person. And she would wait until someone come along.
Lots of jobs have kindie, so nixing that cuts your chances of nailing something quick. If you were here and ready to jump on a bus to head down to a school that has no kindy that would help alot. Hey, I don't like doing kindie, either, so can totally understand. |

This is the big issue. Most schools advertise or notify recruiters within 2 months of their expected hire dates. They often don't know if their current teachers are re-signing new contracts until the last few months. You can expect to start getting a lot more solid bites in late January, early Feb. |

Not many jobs are advertised for March yet. You will see in February this: "Urgent" need help for....
Lost of great jobs can be had if u wait till the last minute. I know this is nerve wracking, but........this is Korea.
Also, put your resume on Daves. And no, it is not free for employers. And like others have said, some schools will not hire u unless then can meet you in person because they will not have to pay airfare.
Good luck |

Again, what kind of job are you looking for???
I know of an upcoming Hakwan job that is wonderful and the people who run the school are great and the fellow teachers are really good people. I know she is looking for someone for the last week of February. If anyone would be interested, email me and I'll let you know where.
The job pays 1.9, 7 days + 3, a nice apartment, and no split shift. but the intangibles....the reason its really worth coming to every day, is that you are treated with respect, your bosses are really nice (even take the staff on outings once every couple of months on their own dime) and they've got a good, friendly staff. You also get paid on time (early if it happens on a weekend) and no hassles at the end of the contract about bonuses or anything.

What does "7 days" mean? You work 7 days a week? I hope that's not it, but I'm having a hard time trying to figure out what else it could possibly mean. |
