Sorry I just note this comment floating around a lot and I for one do.

There I am D503 wandering down the aisles of Jewel. Sometimes I am buying things, sometimes I am just mingling with the workers. Usually it is a late night trip and the store is empty and really calm. I am carrying my basket and happily reading all the labels...what I am buying isn't usually all that important. In my nightmares I am back working at one but for some reason their are only Koreans shopping, or I am at what I know to be "Jewel" only to have the meat man yelling at me in some other language.

I often wonder if this is more related to the extreme difference of goods or to the extreme difference in supermarket style.

I haven't had dreams per se, but as I am thinking of moving soon, I did happen to look at this one grocery store's website, and hit all the virtual sections and almost cried with joy. It seems so much better than anything Korea has to offer, and my friend says that store is a crappy one and there are far better grocery stores there.

That can't possibly be!

When I actually visited one last year, I was stunned speechless. All those choices.

not only grocery stores where my baking needs are met...but as i walked through the toy section of wal-marts yesterday, i fondly remembered the toy r us back in hong kong....

I have to admit that after being here for a while it would be nice to got to a huge supermarket with English speaking staff, but language complications is what makes living in Korea interesting.

Me:Excuse me, where is the butter?
Korean staff member: ?!? no Englishee! mulah! Uheesh!

Last summer wen I went home for a couple of weeks my mom as surprised when I told her that al I had done that day was go to the Loblaws -- and I didn't buy anything...I went in for a few things, and I had this mental list, leftover from Korea of all the things that I wanted/craved/NEEDED TO HAVE!

But the problem was, when I got there, I was in total AWE. It sounds really silly, I know. But I was just sooooo surprised at things...like, new kids cereals, lunch treats, the deli counter, the wonderful assortments of cheese (at such incredibly LOW prices!)...how many different kinds of bread there were, etc etc. Things I could cook becuase I had an oven, the right utensils, the proper cooking pots...it goes on and on.

I could have spent a fortune, but that was the problem...if I was going to get "this" I HAD to buy "that" and on and on. So I got a few things, and that was it. I just enjoyed the walk around looking at things.

And trust me, other shoppers thought I was weird -- picking up things and saying "��!"

Sorry about the multiple post....I got taht funky "DEBUG" error message that ppla re talking about in another thread, that said my post was not being put on..onyl to find it there 4 or 5 times.

When I tried to delete it, it would not let me (got the same error message) and then when I tried to delete it, so I could at least just erase the text and have a one-line blank message, it said "SORRY YOU CAN ONLY EDIT YOUR OWN POSTS"

So, my apology....
