You complete the sentence.

Grading Season. Tis the season of...

Exams will soon be here. Are you ready for the students to visit you? Will they come smiling or begging?

Tis the season of.. "that's a shame that I'll ruin your life if I give you an F, I have no idea who you are! What you didn't come to most of the classes because you were always very sick? Okay get me a note.. you can't? why not? oh, you didn't go to a doctor... so how do you know you're sick? oh.. stomach and headaches? ahh.. you didn't happen to go drinking almost every night did you? yes, I see.. and sure, I'll go with you sometime, but I can't give you an A... Yes, I realize that you want to transfer to another university or get a good job that you need good marks... what? I can't understand you. You should've came to class more.. no you can't write a report to raise your grade, if I let you I have to let everyone else.. by the way, what is that duffle bag for? oh.. you have soccer practice? but I thought you were sick.. yeah, that's really funny.. and i'm sure you are sorry, but you're still not going to get anywhere near an A.. ahh, you don't understand half of what I said.. ok.. well umm.. let me pretend I'm saying something nice and cheery "See you next semester". nono.. don't say thankyou, you don't understand.. I am going to fail you.. you know F.. *big smile* don't start with that SarcasmKills please bit, it's not going to work.. ok? ok.. bye."

unless you can prove I made a mistake don't come asking for me to change your grade. You don't get an A because you want one. YOu get one because you earned it - my class is based on merit not whining. Perfect attendance does not get you an A, participation and effort will get you an A. Merry Christmas.

Speaking of which,

Last time this topic came up, someone wrote that they give each of their students a written clause along with their course objectives and schedule each year.

It was along the lines of "You get graded for improvement and participation. You earn the mark, I don't give you the mark" -- if you are that someone, or you know the part I am talking about, could you please let me know it here. I am starting to develop my course work for March and want to include that in there.

Poet. Amen to that. I couldn't have put it better. Grades are earned, not given; and I won't be swayed in my evaluations, unless, of course, some rich kid wants to give me a Hyundai Tucson.

How about the "I'm sorry I never came to class but I got a job and you have to give me an A+ so I can keep the job. Oh, and I didn't ask for a make-up project because I'm too busy with my job."
My department, at least, suggests I give such people a good grade.
Jobs being scarce and all.

I think so.

Getting kind of bleary eyed now. Just spent 4 hours in Starbucks grading essays and exams and my organisational system of piling crap all over the fucking place never seems to live up to my expectations.

One more batch of essays and a whole bunch of tallying up and I'm home free. Maybe have everything done and submitted by Wednesday or Thursday.

Are you finishing your term soon? How is the semester ending?

Are you ready for the students to visit you? Will they come smiling or begging?
