I agree with what the book. I only have an English degree, but when I teach, I go back to my roots and teach the way my elementary teachers taught me.
Koreans feel they can teach the grammar and reading and leave the conversation up to the Foreigner. The problem is that Language is defined by grammar and best expressed through literature. I belive that English should be taught from all aspects. Read the story and talk about it. Simple yet effective

|

That author was awesome. I agree with him. I get so frustrated sometimes at the approach of our books, which rehash the "I like computer games," and other stock phrases. It is boring for the students and doesn't help them really acquire English. We just got asked about what books we want to use for next year and I was really happy that my co-teacher agreed that we need to introduce reading to the kids. So we are getting a supplementary book (have to keep the same I like computer games book too ). The book reminds me of what I used in grade school. But the stories are told in a simpler style, most frequently it is the vocab that is kept easier while they incorporate some complex sentences. 2 maybe three paragraphs a story, then 2 pages of questions, each story has a section on new vocab, a comprehension section, and then an additional section which deals with concepts--a picture and then choosing the appropriate description. My nighttime boss studied in the US, and I think saw what her English was lacking, and she has occasionally filled in for teachers so she has a grasp of what the students are capable of.
Also my favorite day for my kindie kids is storybook day (they make their own storybook) the oldest class can read along with me, the 2nd oldest is learning to ID words in sentences, the 2nd youngest can tell me whats in the pictures, and the youngest can point to the right picture when I saw the word. Which is a great progression, it makes me feel good knowing that most of my graduating kindie kids can at least read words in english now.
But I agree that a lot of kids get stuck in classes that are far to hard for them. I just had a kid who can't read placed into one of my highest level classes and why, because it would be embarrassing for him to be in a younger, but more appropriate level class. |
