| Dont forget the university teachers, ther 1:1 legal teachers (e2??) or other such teachers not working at a hagwon. then the numbers should add up. I know there is a lot of canadians here in daejeon, but we are seeing a hell of a lot more americans compared to last year. |

I put the percentage of Canadians here at 60 to 70 percent.
The reason is that there are a lot of ILLEGAL Canadians here, due to the 6-month tourist visa they get. Those teachers can make more money working 2 places PT, and aren't listed as E-2 holders.
If the Korean Immigration people wanted to put a major dent in people doing illegal teaching, all they need to do is find a way to convince the gov't NOT to give Canadians a 6-month Tourist visa, or only allow them to get that once in a year.
I'm all for it. It could only help wages.
Americans only get something like 2 weeks or a month-- not easily extended for much longer, and you've got to go get the extension, too.
Yet another issue i'll be discussing with the Kyonngi-do people at an upcoming meeting. |

Now you have an inside line to the government Derrek?
If it was the Americans who had the six months visa you would be waving it under our noses. The six month Visa is a reciprocal thing.......Koreans get it when going to Canada as well. I doubt that the two governments are going to change anything at your suggestion. |

What do think would be the ratio of E-2 to F-2? 10:1? |

I doubt it. Why would they pay you more just because there were fewer illegals in the country? They already pay us far more than Koreans doing the same thing. ( At least in hagwons.) They see our wages as extraordinarily large, why would they give us more if there fewer foreigners here? Out of sight, out of mind. There haven't been ANY wage increases in years. People that came here in 1996 still topped out around W50,000 an hour for the most part. This is exclusively due to illegal Canadians? Maybe Koreans are just cheapskates. I think it's a fantasy to think that you will get paid more if a few Canadians are turned back at the border.
You guys make it seem like there are thousands of illegals here, I don't know any anymore. I used to know a few, hell, I used to be one. The only reason to be in Korea is to work illegally at something. If I only had the job that gives me a visa, I would be dead broke.
Koreans have restrictions on Americans as a protest agaisnt the visa system for entry into the US. This is of course due to the number of illegal Koreans in the US who have overstayed their visas. This has nothing to do with Canadians. Why are you dragging us into this? Visas for Koreans travelling to Canada aren't a big issue in Korea, so we benefit. Let us have our fun. If Korea and the US can see eye to eye on visas, maybe you can too. |
