while this thread is maybe more appropriate for one of the teaching forums, i am posting it here just for the traffic the GD forum gets...
i'm starting to teach a 3rd grade all-writing class next week and am kinda stumped for topics. i think it's a case of 11 month burnout.
anyways... i'm picking everyone's brain here. what is a writing prompt/topic that got your students excited to write? |

these 3 have been successful for me in the past few weeks.
Translate your favourite Korean poem and tell me why you like it and why you think the authour wrote it:
(this is also a good chance to talk of similies and metaphors)
the kids I teach are real label queens, so I downloaded some anti-advertising and we talked about true cost, truth and image selling, I then got them to make their own anti advertisments targeting Korean Brands. some real cool results there.
Yesterday I picked up the Ilbo newspaper and read a story about the 14 year old girl who defected from the north. She's determined to win gold at the Olympics in boxing. She goes to a normal middle school in Seoul now. I got them to pretend it was their job to be her guide/friend for a weekend. Questions they would ask, where they would take her etc. no results on that yet but it sparked some interest. |

If they're into comicsx, photocopy a few pages of one of their favourite titles (eg Konan) and white-out the text, then photocopy again. Ask them to fill in the dialogue and tell you the story of what's happening in the pictures. My 13 year olds loved that one and they did it in small groups. |
