I've been told that it has all been cleared by immigration and I did meet the head school inspector of Gyeonggi Province so I figure at least that is legit.

I'm not 100% sure but I'm almost positive that if immigration approves they will write the name of the place and the duration of time approved on the back of your alien registration card.

hmm...can anyone verify this? If so, how can I find out from immigration if my schools are legit without getting myself into heaps of trouble if they aren't?

You should have an additional stamp in your passport.
Permission for Alteration or Addition of Employment Place

I definitely don't see that anywhere

I say ask for the release letter. If they go for it, good. If not, you can mention that one of the reasons you want to be released is that you're not sure if what they're doing (pimping you out) is legal and you're not comfortable with doing something illegal. You can even tell them that you're thinking about talking to the labour board to find out if it is legal. That in itself may prompt them to give you the release letter.

Question to those of you in the know: If it IS illegal, can I_am_Wrong get in trouble too? It seems to me that it's just the hagwon who is at fault.

--one more to add to the pile--the director told me today that my five days of winter holiday would be the second week of February....just so happens to be Lunar New Year so three of those days are public holidays. I can't believe this guy!!

Tell your boss that some friends took a look at your passport and alien registration card and told you what you are doing is illegal. Then tell him you think it's a good idea to go to immigration to check it out becuase you don't want to do anything illegal and you are sure he (your boss) wouldn't want to either. Play dumb and naive. Don't accuse him of anything. When he assures you it IS legal tell him you still want to check it out anyway. Enjoy his squirming and see if he offers you anything acceptable.

I_Am_Wrong,

One thing I was thinking about while I read your post is that your relationship with the one school is very good. If you have to leave, I would tell that school why and state to them that your really enjoyed working there. Give them your email address and tell them if they are ever looking for someone to feel free to contact you.

Maybe giving them a hint will make them realize you really want to work for them.

In youir case, you are being swindled in two ways:

1. Money. Your director is pocketing your public school wage! That is NOT acceptable. Parents pay you 3 mil but you get 1.9? So you get your hagwon salary but your boss takes your public school salary.

2. Security. You are being left out to dry. You must have a stamp in your passport or permission written on the back of your ARC. Period.

You boss is pimping you out illegally, taking millions from you every month. I say RUN from this situation, or straighten this out with your boss. Get your public school letters of reccomendation, make sure your relationship there is good so you have proper references, and then talk to your boss. Tell him about the legal issues and about the money. Tell him that you want both things straightened out. I wouldnt let this go until you get permission and your pay is bumped up to atleast 2.5, or more. What you should get is atleast half that 3 million the parents pay you.

Abd dont play dumb. You have the info, you are empowered. Dont attack him but state your case. If he continues to deny or stonewall you, you thraten to go to the public school people and tell them about the illegality of this situation. Your boss is making big coin from this. He will balk at this threat. He doesnt want to lose that cashcow. If he still refuses, go to them, tell them everything, and screw the bastard over.

No that's not an issue. If you agree to work in an additional place then what the school pays the director isn't any of your business. That's the nature of captalisim that the owners make a profit of workers.

As for the immigration, unless you have been to immigration, filled out the necessary paperwork and got the endorsement on your passport and arc card then what you are doing is illegal. You are only allowed to work for the person that sponserd your visa and the shcool listed on your passport unless you have approval from immigration. There are big fines and possible deportation risks in doing this!

I was talking about it with my co-teacher today and she informed me that at the public school I get paid 3 million per month by the parents!!! She couldn't believe that my salary was only 1.9 and said that the director told the school that I wasn't making lots of extra money at the other schools..hahaha.

edit: I'm thinking about looking into whether or not I can work directly for the school and pay my own rent (I have the key money saved up).

Pimped. That's harsh.

I say try to see if you can work directly for the school, so long as you enjoy it currently. The only problem would be an upset director trying to impede your progress.
