By Kim Hyun
SEOUL, Dec. 16 (Yonhap) -- With tropical air hindering the Siberian cold front, the Korean Peninsula is experiencing warmer-than-usual weather this winter, irritating domestic seasonal businesses and health authorities, experts said Thursday.

I read this on the yonghap news agency website, however I can't understand why health authorities are so irritated over warm weather. Is it because they are missing out on frostbite cases?

Brrrraving the chill
The temperature in Seoul fell yesterday to minus 5.5 degrees centigrade (22 degrees Fahrenheit), making for a real winter day.

"Citizens are advised to bundle up as a cold continental pressure front is currently expanding over the peninsula," the KMA official said, advising people to take special care of their health and of facilities.

"The Siberian high pressure is likely to influence the nation for a while, so citizens are advised to dress warmly, and farmers and maintenance workers at facilities should guard against possible damage by the cold spell," the Korea Meteorological Administration said.

Let's Wear Underclothes
As part of their energy conservation drive, civic groups
are waging street campaigns in Seoul on December 21,
urging people to wear underclothes to ward off cold weather.
Temperatures went below zero celcius in most of South Korea.

Yeah, those skinny red Korean Santas do look pretty jerky, but these annual "let's all wear longjohns" campaigns accomplish little besides giving civic groups a reason to come downtown, horse around for a few hours, and then go off and get blitzed in overheated restaurants & noraebangs. Or so say the girls I know who've actually particpated. Some years they sell cut-rate sets of under-jammies, but it's just a pretense for gathering in central Seoul for their own own ȸ (year-end bash).

The reality, Reality, is that any Korean who can afford it will blast the thermo and complain a house is too cold if they can't run around in their undies in the dead of winter. Those Koreans who can't afford it will huddle under piles of blankets till spring comes.
