That's Geoje Island baby! The biggest concentration of shipbuilding of any municipality in the world.
Both Samsung and Daewoo shipyards, off the north and northeast coasts, the source of the islands material wealth most say, though I still say it's the beaches all around.
Note: Outpacing Japan overall is no big feat. It's staying ahead of the surging shipbuilding explosion in China that concerns locals. They can seriously undercut on labour costs, and are doing so on many big dollar contracts, I've heard from my adult students who work at the local shipyards. |

I think it's a trick.
Now I can't say he always focuses on the negative.
Darn. |

The cut costs for sure! Just as some of the ABS ship inspectors for some stories.
Or ask the shipyard worker's family how much of a settlement they got after he was killed by a gigantic chunk of metal--less than 30 million. Life is cheap.
Van Islander--your cheerleading for Geoje Island is so tiresome. |

You best check out today's "korean herald." Back page, page 16. Hyundai Merchant Marine faces suspension of business over $1.3 billion U.S. dollars accounting fraud. Long article...but...we all know about business practices in korea...be it the street vendor or the big business.
Trying to be number and doing it honestly...is not the korean way. |

Just a word of clarification here.
Hyundai Merchant Marine, which are now up to their eyeballs in red ink and denials as Hellofaniceguy mentions, is a shipping line. HMM don't build ships, they sail them, and they are not a factor in making Korea No. 1 in shipbuilding as measured by gross tonnage.
Beyond that, perhaps RR takes heart in what VanIslander mentions as being Korea's No. 1 fear: the growing Chinese juggernaut! |
