I had a recruiter tell me that you can change the sponsor on your E2 visa one time WITHOUT leaving the country. Has anyone heard of this? Everything I have read seems to contradict what she said.

Yes you can. I kinda did it. Turned out my school wasn't licensed to have a foreign teacher so the director got his friend who also owned a hagwon to transfer my e2 to his school. It's all pretty illegal in some ways...

Anyway, you need a letter of release from your current employer. You can't just ditch out of your contact.

Yes, I did it this year. You get a letter of release from your old employer, and you and your new employer go to the immigration office and have the E-2 visa transferred. You will get a stamp in your passport that is titled in English, "Permission for Alteration or Addition of Employment Place". It was one trip to the immigration office, entirely legal, and no need to leave the country. I don't know if there is any fee involved, if so you could ask your new employer to pay it.

It may depend how long your next contract runs for.

i got a letter of release after 6 months and decided to get a new 1 year contract at another school. had to do a new visa run.

You can do it no problem. I did it from a wonderland to YBM all on friendly terms, but needed a letter of release.

Thanks....I asked this question for my friend....what has happened is this....she has finished her contract and doesn't want to renew....she has been offered another job and is going to take it...they have offered her a really good salary...but here's the catch...she has to pay for her own visa run....so that will take a chunk of her money. I mentioned that a recruiter had told me this....so what do you think? She has completed her contract so she doesn't need a release letter...? Her visa doesn't expire until January 20th and the new contract will begin on January 3rd.

then changing it shouldn't be a problem at all. has she gone to immigration to inquire? as someone said, it may depend on the office and who she deals with...

Just to clarify - since her contract has expired, has her original e-2 expired also? (ie Has she worked at the first school for a year?)

If the e-2 is expired, she has to leave the country to get a new one, as far as I know.

Well, the timing is a bit tight, and she MAY not be able to pull it off...but if she does get her E-2 visa transferred to a new school, she can THEN get it extended. I worked at the same school for 4 years (it was a good gig Very Happy), and at the end of each year my boss just applied to have my E-2 visa extended for another year. There was no need for a visa run each year.

BUT, Immigration might just say, "No, they should do a new visa run." I don't know, but it's worth a try to first transfer the visa now, and then try to renew it before January 20th. They MIGHT let you do it.

wow, thanks so much...I'll explain everything to her. I'll suggest that she explain everything to her new boss and have them check with immigration.
