Daechidong Waygooki: Well since I don't have the switch-from-Korean-to-English button on my laptop, you'll have to make due, chief.

But since I'm at work, I'll retype my post for you: "I had for dinner last night and it was delicious Very Happy" Is that better?

And Chillin' Villian, thanks I'll try to find ҹҰ somewhere around here, it sounds very good.

Learn to read. Its so easy and you can avoid romanizing Korean on this board. Thats REALLY annoying.

No, what's REALLY annoying is your holier-than-thou attitude.

A) He is learning. He took me up on my offer and PM'ed me for a lesson.

B) He might be using a computer without hangeul capability, such as a laptop he brought from home. Even though I've downloaded Korean language support onto my computer (a laptop with English Windows), it doesn't always work without my having to shut down and reboot. I hope you don't mind if I just romanize a word or two instead of rebooting.

C) He's been on the board for less than a month, so even if he does know how to read and write in Korean, he might not know how to type in Korean without it looking like gibberish.

Any questions?

I dont have a holier than thou attitude. My point was that reading romanized korean is really annoying and difficult. It hurts my head trying to turn it back to hangul as there are no rules and everybody romanizes it in different ways. As you know, even small differences in written hangul make a big difference in meaning. That was my point. You are jumping to conclusions about my attitude.

And the "learn to read" advice is pretty damn sound, dont you think?

Telling someone to learn to read is sound advice. Telling them to learn to read because you find it annoying that they can't type in korean is something else entirely.

Daechidong Waygookin: Correct me if I'm wrong, but the heading of this thread isn't "should I learn to read Korean". And besides the fact the advice wasn't asked for, I think it's pretty condescending for you (and someone else who posted if I remember right) to give me that advice. I'm not stupid, of course I'm going to try to learn how to read, write and speak Korean as soon as I can. In fact some my oldest students have been helping me during some of our free time.

And on top of that you're missing the point of this thread completely. I know enough Hangul to go to the resturaunts around me and sound out (slowly and sometimes incorrectly) what's on the menu, but since I don't understand Korean it's useless information to me. People that posted on this thread were nice enough to give descriptions of some dishes along with their Hangul. That's what I was asking for.

Son Deureo: Thanks again for the help.

I agree. Daechidong Waygookin I think you do have a "holier than thou" attitude. As hypocritical as it is however, I can see your point. Your ID name is romanized Korean and I certainly find that very annoying. Correct that will you Wink

Well, this was a great thread.... Rolling Eyes

Anyway, another good food, especially in chilly weather, is (Seolleongtang) which is a beef broth (made from boiling beef bones for days, or something like that) with some noodles and rice, and green onions, and is way tastier than it sounds. It's usually only served in special restaurants, but it is available for order on some regular Ĵ menus as well.

I'm assuming you're only looking for foods you can eat by yourself, right?

α(mandoo gook) which is dumpling soup is great during winter. I really like the α they serve at the Į(Myungdong Kal Gooksoo) chains. The mandoo they make are so big and delicious. The Į they serve there is also great (the best Į in Seoul they say). Free rice for your α and free noodle refills(!) for your Į.
Very Happy

Laughing

If you don't, then I don't know who does. Not to jump on the bandwagon or anything.

migooknom has some good suggestions too. Kalguksoo is definitly worth having. Manduguk is great this time of year as well.

My regular rotation and the bun-shik restaurant by my work was:

1) Jae-yuk dopbop
2) dolsot bibimbap
3) manduguk
4) kimchi bokembop (fried rice)
5)kimchi chigae
6) donkaseu (pork cutlet)

My apologies for the romanization. I am at a computer devoid of korean and I am unable to install it, so tant pis for a couple of you.

I dont have a holier than thou attitude, I have NO CLUE where you could have got that idea.

I dont think that this forum allows hangeulized IDs. Correct me if the UNTHINKABLE (me being wrong) is infact the case.

Very Happy
