1. Nokia clown rapid reaction force commercial. It makes no bloody sense.
2. That Hilton ad where there's all these jump cuts of people doing very important things at a Hilton. "I'll ask you one more time." "A photo shoot in Tokyo?"
3. Sony's Eskimo Ice Dance. Could we get more stereotypical? And where do Eskimos get the money to buy up a couple hundred $5-a-pop burnable DVDs to pollute the arctic? (Moving up fast on my list)
And it will be back soon:
The Funky Town nuclear power ad. |

When I moved around in Seoul and started getting charged tons extra JUST for CNN, I basically said to heck with CNN.
I'm not bothered by their commercials now.
I hate to let Koreans take advantage of me just because I'm a foreigner, and this is one way they do it.
Another is how Koreans can easily get discount cards for everything. They all have 2 or 3, and can save money on virutally everything. Foreigners who can't get them, don't know about them, or can't easily get them, end up paying extra on a daily basis. |

I thought he made a good point. It is annoying that foreigners can't get the discount cards, especially the sk one's for myself. I bought the phone, I pay the bills, but I can't get the benefits, of which, there are several, especially the 25% off at TGI's. |

I'm not sure because I have never looked into it, but is it that foreigners CAN'T get the discount card? Or is it that it is difficult to get because of a lack of understanding the language? If it is the former then OK. That would be pure discrimination and I can understand why Gollum would be mad.
At the same time, I think I made a good point that we are all aware of already. Too many threads get twisted into a Korea bashing list. I hate it. A topic as innocent as CNN commercials quickly becomes an invitation for someone to bad mouth this country.
CNN is a specialty channel in this country. Most Koreans don't want it because it is not in their language. Hence, it becomes a specialty channel on a cable package. Special channels cost more. I think it is hardly an attack on foreigners. It is merely a way for the cable company to get more money. |

Koreans take advantage of foreigners in big and small ways.
Ex-pats Describe Korea's Culture of Corruption
by Kim Hong-jin, Chosun Ilbo (December 16, 2004)

Foreign scholars merit equal status
Foreign professors tend to be treated as hired hands, without academic standing, and lacking the possibility of career advancement or tenure. They must submit to yearly contracts (compensated at a rate only 60 percent of their Korean peers) while walled off from the permanent Korean faculty who benefit from travel, research funding, sabbaticals, etc. Moreover, when hundreds of Korean scholars enjoy such perks at American and other foreign universities, something is obviously amiss. Rotating foreign professors will hardly solve the problem that lies at the heart of Korean culture and manifests itself in most Korean organizations, where foreigners generally remain apart from decison-making.
According to the Samsung Group's chairman, Lee Kun-hee, to succeed globally, Korea must forgo the thought that Korea and being Korean is superior, and foreign specialists must be treated with respect.

Foreigners Experience Difficulties in Living in Korea
"Even though Korea has achieved some degree of globalization in going abroad, it has still a long way to go for globalization in embracing foreigners inward," said foreigners residing in Korea. An official in the International Cooperation Division of Seoul City admitted, "The same complaints regarding visas, transportation, education, and environment are raised every year without being solved, due to the lack of cooperation from government agencies involved and their passive attitudes."

When I lived in the Gangbyeon area near Techno-Mart, I got CNN for free as part of my whole package for about 13,000 won a month.
When I moved to the Itaewon area, they insisted on charging me a 100,000 won non-refundable install fee (including de-scrambler box), plus an extra 35,000 a month JUST for CNN. My feeling at the time was that they definately were trying to take advantage of foreigners in the area.

Pretty sure we can't for many of the cards.
Unless it's changed (which I don't think it has) I had to register my SK phone in a Korean's name. The card went to him. It's hard for me to use a card with the name "CHO EUN...." on it. I don't look very Korean.
There might be a few select cases with certain foreigers who are married, make a lot of money, or own a business, however.
It's almost like having an extra tax, for sure.
I hope you don't think I'm "bashing" because I'm simply stating the facts of living here. I might add that it's a frustrating not being able to register with many Korean sites because I don't have the proper Korean ID number. |

No I don't think you're bashing Korea. I said I was unsure whether or not foreigners could get those cards. You have informed me.
Thanks |
