I was wondering if anyone has any free time Tuesday-Friday mornings and would like to learn a martial art. I am taking Haidong Gumdo here in Anyang and my Korean practice partner has to bail for a couple of months due to winter camps....(fortunately I have appeared to have dodged that bullet.)
Haidong Gumdo is more of a "sword dancing" than a sword fighting martial art so it is great exercise and mental training for those that want to train but not end up with the breaks and bruises associated with most martial arts. (Plus after you get to black belt you are more than proficient enough to cut someone in half.)
I generally train around 10:00AM-11:00AM near "hagwon"-ga (closest subway stop BeomGye.)
(I'm only a yellow belt...far enough ahead to help if you have never done it, but close enough that I will be struggling with you. Unless you are a higher level then you can help me.)
Level test in a couple of weeks... |

Still looking for a Gumdo (Hai Dong) partner near Beomgye station.
In January I will be training Monday-Thursday (10:00 AM - 11:00 AM)
(Likely switch to evenings after February 13th...)
If interested drop me a line.
Great sport for women, men or adrenaline junkies of either sex... |

Hai Dong gumdo is quite a phoney martial art that many foriegners get sucked into. The OP is correct that it is more like "sword dancing," or as I described it once, "baton twirling."
I'm afraid this is not correct, "Plus after you get to black belt you are more than proficient enough to cut someone in half." Perhaps a person in a coma!
It's the kind of martial art where you get moved up the ranks very quickly. I've had a few friends that made it to the coveted black belt status in less than a year. Also, they were fed lots of Korean revisionist history about how the sword arts orginate from Korea and such. Lots of martial arts systems like to make up their own history, and this one is no different.
As for the last post about "adrenaline junkies," what a joke! Haidong gumdo a wussy pastime! Lots of show and nothing else. Great for people that like to pretend they are engaged in some kind of mystical, kung-fu, Asian martial art experience vison quest.
If you want your blood to surge, try Dae Han Gumdo (also known by the Japanese name kendo.) Dressed in full armor and holding a bamboo sword, you face off and enjoy this dance of ultra-violence in a controlled, honorable setting. Brusies: Yes. Pain: yes. Rewarding: yes.
Good for mental training: Yes, when you have to square off with your opponent after he has clocked you in the head for the tenth time. |

Whatever...if you knew anything about ANY martial art you would know the "coveted" blackbelt is the STARTING point for any martial art not the end point...In HDGumdo, the colored belts are used to teach the forms...training starts at the blackbelt level.
As for Kendo, I used to train with my ex-gf's father...it was a blast...as for HD gumdo...it's true...none contact...(until well into the black-belt levels) (and even then just sparring, otherwise your opponent would be cut in half...)
Good to see you have an open mind though.....
