Government Tightens the Screw on Alien Workers
The government says it has no choice but to sharpen the regulations and their implementation to prevent a flood of foreigners living lawlessly here.

Illegal Migrant Workers Face Tougher Crackdown
"The matter of illegal foreign workers won't be solved by a crackdown. It only infringes on their rights, which are already vulnerable to bad Korean employers," said Ko Gi-bok, general secretary of the Joint Committee for Migrant Workers in Korea.

In some cases, pressure from crackdowns leads to suicides, Ko added.

"But if the government sticks to its crackdown policy, it should crack down on employers who allow illegal foreigners to work for them, not the workers," he said.

It's from February, but she has an interesting point:
Quote:
Kang Hyon-joo, spokesperson of the migrant workers labor organization, argued the government also understands that it cannot drive every undocumented migrant worker out of the country because that would mean the collapse of the nations small- and medium-sized businesses who largely depend on the undocumented work force.

That December Hankooki article also mentions some suprising figures:
Quote:
As of the end of November, there were 185,719 foreign illegal residents, accounting for 43.9 percent of the total of 422,980 foreigners living in Korea, according to the Justice Ministry.

This guy read in Joongang that:
Quote:
about 6000 hagwons for English and 10,600 E2 holders in Korea

10,600 legal teachers out of a total of 422,980 foreigners in the country, a big chunk of which, are probably DDD migrant factory workers. So what are we, 2.5% of the foreigner population? So, knowing that teachers are never known to be paranoid in this country, where the hell are they getting all of this staff to go after teachers, who teach privates on the side, considering that our big 2.5% is the most major focal point of Immigration's most pressing issues?
