Investigations by Korean prosecutors have revealed that crime syndicates like the Japanese yakuza and Hong Kong triads have begun directly smuggling drugs into Korea in order to make the country, which used to be regarded as a transit point for narcotics, a major drug market. It was also revealed that local crime organizations have begun full-scale involvement in the drug trade.

Philipon is a sythetic drug similar to 'speed' or methamphetamine.

NK Becomes One of the Largest Narcotics Producers
North Korea reportedly has become the third biggest opium-producing country, following Myanmar and Afghanistan, through an abrupt extension of poppy fields. A source from the intelligence sector said on May 7, 'We received secret information that NK has been growing poppy plants since the 1980's, and now the area under cultivation reaches 20.8 million pyong(68.8 million square meters).

Although the rise in opium production is a serious concern, the NK government's shift to another drug is potentially a far greater concern. Production levels of philipon, a sythetic drug similar to 'speed' or methamphetamine, seems to have risen after the loss of cultivated land due to heavy flooding in 1995.'

'NK appeared as the driving force behind Japan's 40-billion-dollar philopon market.' The source announced, 'I heard that the Japanese Coast Guard seized 100 kilograms of philopon last April from a cargo boat that had passed through NK.' The official added, 'The United Nations' anti-drug program discovered that a NK company imported 50 tons of ephedrine, the main component in philopon but also found in various cold remedies, last year. According to the U.S.'s analysis, the amount of ephedrine needed for manufacturing cold medicine in NK only amounts to 2.5 tons, at most, yearly.'

The U.S. State Department reportedly stated that it will seek effective measures to deal with NK's state-sponsored drug trafficking, as it now has conclusive proof of NK's participation in the international narcotics market.
